Reinstallation abd data saving ..?

One of my office pc when powered on it started showing error line before GUI saying something like Unable to detect some usb port as I dont remember whole thing now, so the pc user said do fresh ubuntu install but save data if possible ....... So is there anyway I can save data like in windows as we do fresh windows in "C" drive and other drive or partition data remains as it is .......:confused:

If this error is actually at power on then its a computer (BIOS) problem. If Ubuntu is actually booting and you get the error, then its something with Ubuntu. Reinstalling Ubuntu for a USB problem is a little drastic.
