Thunderbird - how to force it to use a VPN

I have one or more email accounts in Thunderbird that I would like to use exclusively via a VPN connection. I have the VPN running most of the time but when it is shut off, I might mistakenly have Thunderbird still running.

What is the best way to do this? Through GUFW/UFW rules?
