Hello Ubuntu users!

Introduction: For the longest time now I've been using Nokia Symbian phones as they were doing the job for me, but now I need something more advanced in a phone.
Android as an operating system looks pretty nice and will do the job still, but the problem is that I like to tinker a lot with technology.
After talking with some friends they were saying that no matter what Android phone you have, as long as there's enough RAM and CPU, you can install pretty much any OS on it. Wipe it clean and start over.
Sounds easy, but I know that tinkering like that always means trouble and a lot of time/money spent.

Idea: I have my eye on ZTE BLADE III (http://www.gsmarena.com/zte_blade_iii-4983.php). Screen is nice and big for reading ebooks and CPU runs at 1GHz. For those bucks it'll certainly do the job.
Would it?

Does anyone have some experience with this?

Or any TESTED tutorials "out there"?

Thank you!
