If you want to post full size high quality images without having to sign up for anything you can upload them to something like omploader (http://ompldr.org/), then just insert the thumbnail in your post and link it to the full size URL. This is how I did mine on the last page.

LOL, that's been around for a while. Also try:

Install xteddy and run any of the following.

Install and run oneko.

I've been thinking of doing exactly the same, I could do with a fresh installation. I'm still in two minds about my filesystem choice.

Would you recommend btrfs + compression and did you come across any issues? I do have proper backups :)

Yup, I'd recommend it. The Arch wiki isn't very clear on this, but when it tells you to edit the fstab, that's when you need to edit the mount flags. Add

compress=lzoonto the existing flags (you can use gzip I think instead). Here's my fstab:

#
# /etc/fstab: static file system information
#
# <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump><pass>
# /dev/sda2
UUID=7ead097b-5515-4ee4-8ed2-d87a8f5231b2 / btrfs rw,relatime,space_cache,compress=lzo 0 0
NB: no fsck.btrfs yet, so to stop accidental non-boots by having an unexpected fsck, I set the sixth field to zero, to stop the boot process trying to check the disk. Not the most maintainable solution, but I hear btrfs is mostly self-healing anyway.

As for issues, it's been on my machine all of about four hours, but no problems so far! Just really zippy boot times.

I preffer taking five minutes of my life to make XFCE look like GNOME 2 did over using some kind of fork like MATE, which is a good idea but it's still outdated; GTK3 applications look weird on it plus there were lots of graphical glitches while I used it. Xubuntu's custom default themes (Greybird, Bluebird...) have full GTK3 support, and they're lovely (I'm using just Greybird with the Bluebird Xfwm theme, and the Faenza-dark icons).
So I love XFCE because you can happily use GTK2 themes, but also GTK3-compatible themes.

XFCE happens to be my DE of choice but I have MATE installed on a number of distros and I haven't run into the problem of GTK3 apps looking weird or graphic glitches. If the distro has GTK3 support it looks fine assuming you use GTK3 themes.

Mine isn't heavily modified, but that is because I finally upgraded from 10.04 to 12.04 this afternoon and thankfully my settings survived!

I am pleasantly surprised as much migrated successfully as did! Adding the users back was a snap and even rotating wallpaper and account "faces", etc. were pulled in and worked just fine.

All I have left really is figuring out a umask issue with a shared partition which I haven't had to think about in over 2 years! Ughh..

No super key.

Mine is an 1871-4AU, built in 2005, I think. When I found this one, I cleaned it up, and added memory (not for the weak of heart), and then installed Xubuntu 12.04. Since it will take a PAE kernel, I've had 12.10 on it too. Either way, it's rock solid, and as quick as a weasel. Hope yours is working well too.

Edit:

My only problem is that Xubuntu doesn't recognize a sound card. Out of curiosity, do you have sound working on yours?

My sound works fine, but it is a non-PAE kernel so I've managed to get 12.04 on it but am not sure I can move further than that (with Ubuntu... haven't checked the other distributions).

I did run 12.04 Xubuntu on it before and I think it had sound. Now I'm not sure...

Wow. That's ... really surprisingly attractive. I'm tempted to try out Cinnamon now.

I'm using Unity for now. I've adapted Gnome Cupertino Unity to actually work with GTK apps that aren't Chrome (previously, the titlebar didn't match the toolbar in anything GTK2 but Chrome, so I changed the GTK2 background color and then created app-specific settings for Chrome to change it back) and also reduced the window controls to symbolic ones instead of "physical buttons," which bug me. Edit: And moved the title in the titlebar to the left, instead of centered, so it matches the titlebar that appears in Compiz Scale.

goldshirt9, you convinced me. I'm playing with Cinnamon, and I can already feel myself getting attached to features that aren't available in Unity or Shell, while Synapse and DockBarX (which, I know, are not highly active projects at the moment) fill in everything that Cinnamon is missing. I really love the "peel" effect of the workspace switcher, and the maximize and snap animations....

The dock is on autohide.

Rocking with MATE... And now Compiz! My poor graphics card can't handle some effects, so I have to play with the Animations plugin until I find a fast-but-unglitchy configuration.

Using the Adwaita Cupertino SL Unity window/GTK theme, and the Faenza icon theme. My favourite wallpaper ever, which is of course a default one in Precise!

It installs a separate Gnome-based login session that calls Compiz as the WM and uses Cairo Dock and an indicator applet area. Cairo Dock itself is extremely customizable, more so than your average panel. Although how zagortenay333 got his Conky indicator to display above Cairo leaves me be-boggled.

From a technical point of view, I imagine it'd be possible to use something like Compiz's window matching support. http://wiki.compiz.org/WindowMatching

I will tell you my secrete ;)The background is not rendered by a dock! Its a template i pasted on the wallpaper itself! However since there are a lot of people to whom that looks like a rather rubbish solution there is an alternative! You just use conky to render your background. Its very simple.I even think you can find one on deviant.

Oh, that's clever. Nicely done. = ) And yeah, while baking the graphic into the desktop wallpaper seems like a hack, dropping in another layer of Conky to draw it is really clever.
