Nothing major here just a Wallpaper that I found using Google Image Search that I have slightly modified using Gimp.

I like the new Dash Home icon that is used in 13.04 so I also decided to change it except that I changed the color to Orange (also using Gimp).

My ThinkPad, running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I keep my important documents in Dropbox, and I pretty much use the Unity launcher for all of my applications, so my desktop is nice and clean!

I keep my documents in Dropbox AND Ubuntu One. Since finally my laptop and desktop are both running 12.04, Ubuntu One actually works for non /home/<user>/Ubuntu One folders. That didn't work on 10.04.

Dropbox, though, is still the easiest and most cross-platform service I have run across so I doubt I'll be getting rid of that anytime soon.

You can also use symlinks with Dropbox to connect other locations. My Dropbox is mostly a collection of symlinks from Documents, etc.

I don't bother with that because Ubuntu One handles that by default. Plus I have more space in Ubuntu One than Dropbox.

So I use Dropbox for projects and stuff, and Ubuntu One for general files (and a separate location for pictures).

How does it perform on your machine? I found the Unity session in Virtualbox too slow (probably because I could only assign 12 MB of video memory) the Gnome Classic session with no effects runs pretty smooth however.

Well I could not take it any longer and also created a Kubuntu 12.10 VM. I'm surprised how well KDE (especially Kwin) performs with so little graphical memory and 1 GB RAM. The effects are pretty smooth and the host system only has an Intel HD2500.

Back to the LTS, at least for the moment, with the Pantheon desktop. Using Synapse in place of Slingshot, though (and I'm happy to see that despite being otherwise rather locked down, Pantheon does allow Slingshot to be replaced wholesale.)

Plank is surprisingly not a bad dock, and the workspace switcher, while rather useless, is unbearably cute. In fact, I think that's most of what I'm liking about Elementary; it's the cutest desktop I've ever seen. Gnome's simple panel combined with Unity's appindicators are also a nice compromise. And the window animations of Cinnamon on top, but more consistent and clean. It's neat.

I like the idea of having the lightest weight dock but that is one feature that I'd really need (and Cairo dock has).

VinDSL, I'm glad you're liking!

Yeah, most of the appearance comes from the icon theme, so it's blending just as nicely for VinDSL's super-future HUD.

I would say that effects have a bearing too, though. Cairo by default is a sparkling, spinning, zooming mobile of icons that are sometimes on fire. I like that Plank, DockBarX, and AWN (RIP) all keep it simple by default.

Does Plank allow an option

Sadly, no, it doesn't offer any options at all except for hide behavior and size, and its workspace behavior is nonexistent. DockBarX supports making the dock represent only the current workspace, and I prefer that, too. Elementary's workspaces are already fairly weird, since you can't simply move a single window from one workspace to another, but Plank under another desktop might be troublesome.

I do think DockBarX (run as a standalone dock, DockX) is lighter than Cairo, though, although I haven't tested that.

Back to 12.04 LTS. 12.10 simply wasn't stable enough.

12.04 seems even better than it was last time I used it. Maybe I'll just stick to LTS releases from now on. Seems the non-LTS should have a 'beta' label on them.

Yeah, Cairo has some crazy effects (though i personally used none of them, except "wobbly" which makes this nice ripple effect when an app launches). Mostly Cairo has great, and useful applets, other dock just do not have, which makes it quite productive.

However i wouldn't recommend it on a low powered machine.

In a sense, they are indeed beta. They contain experiments that eventually lead to the next LTS. I generally stick with LTS versions, except when doing fresh installations on new hardware.

Copper Bezel
January 25th, 2013, 07:49 PM
Yeah, I periodically end up going back to the LTS on at least one machine, and I think I'm happy with sticking with it on my primary machine for now. It's been almost fifteen minutes since I've had to click through an "Ubuntu has encountered an internal error that we won't explain until you report it" dialog, which is a step up from my experience in 12.10.

Yeah, it's really in a whole other class, with its own screenlet / desklet system, subdocks, complex multiple panel support, and granular customization; there are more settings screens and individual options in Cairo Dock than in all of Gnome System Settings, I think, a little bit like configuring Compiz. AWN had a little bit of that in its support for multiple panels, applets, and theming (about the degree of control in the old Gnome Panel,) and I guess Docky has some applets, too, where Plank (derived from Docky but very streamlined, partly to avoid redundancy with Wingpanel) and DockBarX (initially a Windows 7 Superbar clone as a panel applet for Gnome (2) Panel and AWN, both defunct, but able to run standalone now) are both exclusively little trays to manage applications and show app status (roughly the feature set of the Unity launcher.) They're all very different sorts of applications meant to fill different roles in different desktop environments. And then there's the fact that they're made to integrate with different window managers, and different versions of different window managers....

Yeah, that's the thing - it always seems like a tradeoff for this or that necessary feature, and the LTS usually has more stable apps, but won't have the later drivers you might need for newer hardware.

When 12.04.2 is released in a couple of weeks it will use a backported 3.5 kernel (instead of the 3.2 kernel that 12.04 was released with).

This should mean that you can run 12.04 on newer hardware out of the box.

Interesting! I have the opposite situation...

I'm running ancient iron (nVidia GeForce 7600GT) and need to either patch nVidia legacy drivers myself (for use with bleeding-edge Linux kernels) or wait for the Canonical devs to get around to it.

There are many video drivers available in the official/unofficial PPAs, and they're constantly being updated.

What I do is go through all the "changelogs" in Synaptic, to make sure the driver will work with my vid card and kernel (the easy way). Otherwise, I patch the drivers myself (the hard way). LoL! :D

EXAMPLE: This is what I'm talking about...

http://vindsl.com/images/vindsl-desktop-26-jan-2013-1(650x520).png (http://vindsl.com/images/vindsl-desktop-26-jan-2013-1.png)

First, I do a search for nvidia-304 (nVidia legacy drivers). Then, I view all the changelogs and see if anyone has patched them for Linux 3.8.

In the above case, somebody at Canonical finally patched it, and I replaced my custom driver(s) with the official version. And, so it goes...

Anyway, I've never considered ppl with the latest video cards having the same problem, in reverse.

What I do is go through all the "change logs" in Synaptic, to make sure the driver will work with my vid card and kernel (the easy way). Otherwise, I patch the drivers myself (the hard way). LoL! :D

Anyway, I've never considered ppl with the latest video cards having the same problem, in reverse.

well, I haven't had this card long. I had an older Nvidia card that always worked right out of the box. Never thought about my graphics card not working. I know this card isn't that new but I guess new enough to not be supported in 12.04.

Also when I try to put in my 12.04 disk and boot it up I can't get to the part of installing :( Never see a desktop

NO I DIDN'T HOP!
No, I didn't. Indeed. It's Cinnamon in Ubuntu 12.10. I got a bit angry with Unity due to its crashes but, instead of hoping and hoping to hide my pain, I just installed Cinnamon and the Ambiance Ubuntu Cinnamon theme.
And here's the result.

I just used a lovely wallpaper I found in my Images folder, and the themes previously mentioned. I'm really happy with this and I have to say it really feeds my needs.
Recommended to everybody who's searching for a productive and fast, but pretty, desktop environment.

What seems to work for me is to install dockbarx and the AWN-dockarx applet, remove the default taskbar applet, add dockbarx applet, quit AWN, restart it again, remove dockbarx applet and re-add the default taskmanager applet. Fiddly but you only need to do it once.
