Using a new Compaq Presario CQ58 and have the KDE desktop installed.

Holding down the 'fn' key, I can't get the screen brightness to go down when I press the small '*' (brightness) key.

Can anyone tell me how to decrease the brightness on this pc?

Do you know the graphics card manufacture in the PC?
I have a custom box with an ATI graphics card, I had to install the AMD drivers to gain access to the control center to adjust brightness and contrast.

If you go to settings -> Additional Drivers does anything come up?

Maybe like this:

(item 2.5, right column)

The 'additional drivers' thing did it! I activated the drivers, restarted and can now adjust brightness.

I've attached a screen grab of a newspaper. The fonts seem a bit unclear to read. Can anything be done about this? Will I need to repost elsewhere?

Thanks for the help with the display brightness issue....

Is your monitor set to the right resolution?
