When you push mouse to upper left the workspaces are revealed.
If you click the plus bar, it adds a new workspace, making each on smaller.

He must have clicked the plus bar thouand or hundreds of times today when he got frustrated with his desktop vanishing.

Anyway there is no way to unclick and delete added workspaces as the added desktops have simply disappeared.

The screen only shows grey with the plus bar on the right

How can I restore the funtionality of this again?

Hmmm in Cinnamon when I go upper left shows workspaces. If I want out of expose mode I click on the home or known as workspace 1 to bring me back to desktop.

The right arrow or plus should only be clicked to add another workspace and has no other function to get you pack out. Mousing over a workspace should show upper right of an X to delete workspace.

Again to get back to desktop requires you to click on on the 1st workspace.

Yes, but the workspaces are not visible. Just the grey background with a plus sign on the right.

Try yourself, clicking on the plus sign. Each added workspace gets put into a long string, and each tile shrinks in size. Do it hundreds of times and they will just visually shrink so small they disappear.

You dont have to click more than 10 or 20 to see what I mean.
