ubuntu wont start.

hi after alot of thinkin about it i took the jump and installed ubuntu along side w7. w7 still works so thats great but ubuntu says safe video mode and wont start. i did manage to get it 2 start by recovery mode then exit to root shell and typed startx but nothin worked, no sound or net and only 1 monitor displayed propley. in help it said about typing nm-applet for network manager but it just said unknown command.
ubuntu works great off the disk but the real install doesnt want to know.
any ideas?
