View Full Version : [ubuntu] Using Proxy Services for Privacy

Like many of you I suppose, over the years I've slowly adopted better security and anonymity practices such as using a GNU OS, Firefox, script blockers, HTTPS extension, full disk encryption and so on.
I thought the next logical step would be to use some type of encryption/proxy on all ports so that any connection of any kind is private. Tor is unbelievably slow, but I came across services such as TorGuard where you pay a monthly fee for a VPN.
This seems very inexpensive for the protection it provides, but I was wondering if people could share their thoughts and trials with services they have personally used. As I understand it, browsing speed remains fast (YouTube is the biggest downloading activity for me), and they are easy to set up on Ubuntu.
For those of you with experience using these things, I would appreciate any advice or general information you can provide on the subject.

Sounds like your on the right track so far.. I think the only thing you left out would be pgp mail encryption.
I haven't used torguard's proxy service but I just gave their free vpn a try and must say I am actually impressed. I prefer OpenVPN over anything else and they seem to offer their own openvpn client. No need to mess with network manager. :) I'm getting really good speeds through the Canada servers:

Trial is only good for 24 hours...

Thanks for the comment, I didn't know they offered a free trial. I'm definitely leaning towards them over others but I'm still confused on how it all works. Like whether or not I can use it on multiple computers with one subscription, or better yet, if I could configure my router so that all connections use it.
I haven't heard of pgp mail encryption, that is another issue to think about since AFAIK there is no way to email without it being recorded somewhere, at least using conventional email services.

AirVPn are great, supports anything including torrent traffic and you can pay with bitcoins if you want to remain anonymous. I lose about 5% speed which on my 75mbps connection i dont even notice it.
Peace

I've heard of them as well and that reduction in speed is certainly acceptable to someone like me that doesn't need enormous bandwidth. I wonder though if the fact that they operate out of Europe will reduce it much more for those in the US.

That's good news, I'll email them to see for sure. They actually address the multiple device/router thing in the FAQ's that I mentioned earlier as well. TorGuard didn't if I remember right.

I have been using WiTopia (https://www.witopia.net/products/) for a few years now after trying most. I'm very happy and with the service and they have servers world wide.
