I have a Compaq CQ 56 that I've had for a little over a year. Have had Ubuntu, Win7, and Backtrack 5 on it for quite a while now, though I've hardly used the first and last. I've been trying to migrate to Ubuntu, and I suppose this problem will be the kick in the I've needed. Anyways, I've noticed my laptop gets fairly hot from time to time and sometimes I've also noticed Win7 seems to run faster on battery and slower when charging (though flash video's lagged here and there randomly). (Don't get the idea that this is a Windows problem, i'm just giving symptoms) The real problem happened a few days ago. I was running project 64 emulator and all of a sudden the frame rate dropped significantly and the computer didn't respond very well, so I had to force shutdown via the power button. I rebooted and windows wouldn't start so I switched to Ubuntu (or maybe it was backtrack) i don't recall now. Anyhow one of the two gave the message MSI quirk detected, and maybe it was in the recovery boot option. At that point the bootup hung and wouldn't go any further. I later pulled the battery and various components blew the whole thing out and then all three systems booted fine, but after a little fiddling with win7 it did it again, and I noticed the system was fairly hot. Pulled out just the battery for a short bit, and the system was back to fine. I've run Ubuntu for longer periods of time just fine, but win7 will nearly hang (become very slow) and then all three systems won't work. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to diagnose this? Is this a hardware problem, which I believe it probably is? If so, does anyone have any idea what it might be or how fixable it is on a laptop? I don't want to toss this laptop, since i'm in brazil, and quite likely this compaq is better than most of what they've got to offer here that's not ridiculously priced for brazil wages! Anyhow, I'm fine with sticking to Ubuntu from now on to not get this problem again, but what if it really is a hardware problem that could show up after a while on Ubuntu too? Any suggestions would be really appreciated!!! Diagnostics software, commands I can give ubuntu that may give me or you a better idea of what's going on? Thanks in advance for your patience!!!
