New laptop. Encrypt Ubuntu install slow it down?

I just bought a new laptop and will be using it in many different places. I want to encrypt the Ubuntu install but I also have some of my dvd movies on this computer. Will the large movies (1-2 GB in size) slow down decrypting when booting?

Will the encryption in general reduce battery life and make more heat?
