So I'm trying to use the CD drive on my PC but it's not working. When I press the eject button it ejects and when I put in a disc, it sounds as if it's doing something.
I don't think this is a problem with just Ubuntu either, as it didn't work in Windows.
Any help would be much appreciated!

Well there is few thing I would consinder.
First is that DVD/CD dirty or damaged, if yes then try another just to test is everyithing fine with your CD Drive.
If you still have problem it could be your CD/DVD drive is dirty, you can by cleaning CD for CD/DVD drive in any computer shop it shouldn't be expensiv.
And if that doesn't help you can say your CD/DVD drive is dead.

Does the BIOS recognize it?" If not, double-check the SATA or PATA cable (it sounds like power cable is okay since it ejects and spins the disk).

If BIOS recalled that it is not working, well than your screwed on that account. I would personality recommend a new disk drive.
