Hello, regarding security, i have a question. Assuming that
ubuntu 12.04 can be hacked, compromised or whatever the proper terminology is, would it not have to be done by someone also
using a linux system? Or is that a misconception on my part?
Thanks in advance.

It can be done from any OS, it depends on the skill set and tools used.

Not necessarily, but it helps knowing linux of course. It depends which kind of attack is is. I recommend this link

Interesting, is there a short answer as to what to look for if you
suspected you were being compromised?

Read that WIKI and towards the end is a section https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BasicSecurity/DidIJustGetOwned

Mainly it is all about proactive Log file monitoring and best/safe practices and not reactive ;-)
