wow...I am genuinely dissapointed in the direction ubuntu has taken. I am of the impression it is VERY worth staying on 8.04 LTS because it was the LAST reasonable installation I remember. This 12.04LTS is garbage in the respaect that it is not clear whether it is hungup or not AND it has a god awful number of multi-hour processes where it is difficult not to want to hit the power button until the computer shuts off and try to put XP back on...at least I could tell the windows install was working or not

the main question is I am stuc at another multi-hour process...configuring boot loader...is it really doing anything useful after an hour or is the install trashed???

12.04 installed flawlessly and quickly for me... Many times on many machines. Don't exaggerate the general importance of your own negative experience. It's just *your* machine and *you*.

First post a hardware list here, in this fashion:

It is a pretty stock dell d630...I have installed 8.04LTS on quite a few of these...ranging from dell d610 to d830...all went well...as you put it...flawlessly. This 12.04 is obnoxious in that it takes off to lunch and gives no indication whether it is doing anything useful or not.

case in point...the install has been sitting at configuring boot loader for at least an hour...I know that disk operations are time consuming...but what is this operation doing and is it doing anything useful at all at this point. It seems as if this install must do a *scan* of each and every block on the disk several times.

so...the quewstions still stands...after this length of time (I started the install 3 hours ago)...is the install still working or is it hungup and trashed...or will it eventually finish sometime today (or tomorrow maybe)

This particular installation probably failed. No earthly use in waiting, I suppose.

Please supply the hardware list *in the requested fashion*.

I suppose you've checked the md5sum of the iso file you are using to install the system?
