there's a new consortium forming for mobile Linux (mentioned in tech news a few months ago); I'll add it here, as soon as they have a name & site.

however, I just learned about MontaVista’s Mobilinux Open Framework (http://www.mvista.com/solutions/mof_overview.html)

not sure, if there are more. if you know of other mobile Linux consortiums, please post them here.

I think that all of them should collaborate with each other.

its called ALP. that will be using gtk.

MontaVista develop using QT only (AFAIK).

the mobile phone that i have runs on a linux kernel, but motorola UI. all new motorola gsm phones run on a linux kernel. many of their new phones will run on a platform called JUIX(java-linux), and is horribly crippled. in essence, they're smartphones, but motorola has made it so that it difficult to install native apps on them.

We already have Linux OS's that work on mobile devices. Ubuntu is a desktop distro and should remain that. We should focus on doing one thing well instead of doing everything terribly.

BWF89,

prior to Ubuntu, there were other Linux distros for desktops. so, why was Ubuntu created?

yes, to a certain degree, I agree about staying focus. however, it all depends on the perspective of what to focus.

I believe that Ubuntu should remain focus as an OS suite. however, I don't think that it should be restricted to desktops (http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop). there are reasons for creating the server (http://www.ubuntu.com/server) version. so, if it were possible to port it to mobile devices (e.g. celluar phones, pdas, etc.); then a mobile edition should be considered.

Ubuntu doesn't have to help develop the mobile Linux port; that's what those think tank consortiums are for; what Ubuntu can do is adapt to it. porting Ubuntu to mobile Linux is not necessarily going out of focus.

hi bruce89,

thanks for that URL!

so, EmbeddedUbuntu (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/EmbeddedUbuntu)'s actually been working on it for almost a year now:?::!::?: \\:D/ =D>

I hope that all those developing a mobile Linux will collaborate for an open standards.

Open Source Development Labs (OSDL) and the Linux Phone Standards Forum (LiPS) announced (on August 14, 2006) that they are now both collaborating their work on mobile Linux (http://lipsforum.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=44&Itemid=163)!
LiPS and Open Source Development Labs (OSDL) have agreed to collaborate to ensure consistency between OSDL’s kernel-level initiatives and LiPS’ work to standardise specifications at the application and service level.

the mobile Ubuntu should be free.

therefore, the price will depend on the mobile device you select. and, prices will definitely vary from the device & retailer you purchase from.

I have no objections to adding to Ubuntu's 'portfolio' really, but no disrespect intended, I can't help but wonder how long it will be before we see things like G-M-Ubuntu-CE edition!

Definitely! I would love to see Ubuntu supporting notebooks even better than it does now. Notebooks are extremely important as their market share is substantially growing and Linux needs go improve support for mobile hardware to be able to cope with Windows on mobile machines - at the moment it does only partially.

I thought the OP meant phones etc!, but as far as notebooks go, I think we will get there. Development in the Linux world seems to have gathered momentum in recent years. So I think that whilst it was once true to say, for Linux, get the oldest serviceable machine you can (!), we are headed away from that now. My Laptop worked with Ubuntu out the box (Toshiba), and such stories are no longer rarities. There are clearly problem areas still, such as video card manufacturers, but sooner or later, I am sure they will join in!

a la Mobile (http://www.a-la-mobile.com) has developed a complete Linux systems platform ("Convergent Linux Platform (http://www.a-la-mobile.com/solutions/convergent.html)"). Designed to be readily adaptable to wireless handsets, this new platform enables handset manufacturers to bring new Linux-based smartphones to market rapidly while drastically reducing development, testing and deployment costs. Convergent Linux is the first viable mobile operating system alternative to proprietary offerings.

I'm currently working on transforming my PSP into a linux device. If I can't get it to work, I'll just get a palm pilot with one.
Then...it's cannabilizing time!
I've always to make a computer gauntlet, a watch with a whole operating system, and it covers my wrist and forearm. The icons would have to be HUGE and it would need its own interface to switch through apps (a simple enough one, click the right button to go right of the current application, left to go left, center to use.
That would be awesome. The power of GPS, Google Earth, Wikipedia, Linux, Thunderbird, Firefox, Banshee, Frostwire, Pidgin, Comix, an RSS reader, and Skype, all put together with wifi, a nicely sized hard drive, a sleek design, some RAM, and a tiny graphics card.
Is it realistic? I think so.
I'd totally wear one, people would be like "what's that?", and I'd say "My computer."
Too bad I know nothing of electrical engineering...

From the Ubuntu Forums Code of Conduct (http://ubuntuforums.org/index.php?page=policy).

If a post is older than a year or so and hasn't had a new reply in that time, instead of replying to it, create a new thread. In the software world, a lot can change in a very short time, and doing things this way makes it more likely that you will find the best information. You may link to the original discussion in the new thread if you think it may be helpful.

The forums still offer suggestions when typing the title for a new thread, eg;

I see nothing wrong with replying to an old thread if it's truly pertinent to the original topic, and if SPAM is the problem then active and enthusiastic forum members are the best tool available :D

I would be most interested in a Ubuntu mobile device that trebles as a PC-tablet-phone. I am less interested in a Ubuntu phone as I see little need for a mobile phone for myself.

A Ubuntu mobile multi device would be as innovative as the decision taken by IBM all those years ago to source the hardware for the IBM Personal Computer from off the shelf parts and not to patent or copyright the product.

Personally Ubuntu on a mobile device would have to offer a lot more than Android does all ready. I found that many of the utilities I use daily, or at least weekly aren't available on any Linux distribution.

I use my tablet for content consumption, not creation, so a full blown Linux distribution of any kind would be a waste as far as I'm concerned.
