I'm a confirmed Ubuntu user, but I need a live CD Linux distribution on which multimedia and things like web video work right out of the box for a project with a friend.

Which distro would you recommend that can do this nicely right out of the box? Window manager is not so important, but I need some sort of word processor such as Kword or Abiword.

Thanks.

Glen

I'd recommend Mepis 6, which is based on Ubuntu, but it has almost all the major proprietary codecs out there.

SimplyMEPIS 6 and KNOPPIX 5, both KDE distros, have built-in multimedia support. I'm not sure if that includes Flash, which most web videos use. The official release of SimplyMEPIS 6 will be on July 10 (hopefully), what they have now is just the RC (release candidate).

Both of them have OpenOffice, AFAIK.

I don't know a GNOME-based live CD that has built-in multimedia support. I'm not very familiar with GNOME (yet).

I'm pretty sure Mepis has Flash built-in as well as Java.

I don't think it includes w32codecs or libdvdcss2, though.

If you are looking for a "live" CD only. I would strongly recommend:

Dreamlinux (http://msxml.webcrawler.com/info.wbcrwl/clickit/search?r_aid=684C067AD2264D8CBB849FF734F6DD10&r_eop=1&r_sacop=1&r_spf=0&r_cop=main-title&r_snpp=1&r_spp=0&qqn=o7dV%2B2zr&r_coid=239138&rawto=http://www.dreamlinux.com.br/)

(it includes W32codecs)

Again, this is only good for a "live" CD it is still too new for an install.

EDIT: They have a new release candidate:

Dreamlinux 2.0 XFCE WORKS Edition RC2 ( Release Candidate 2 ) English Version

Hello to all our international users and friends!
We're glad to make available the Release Candidate 2 (and possibly the last prior to the final release) of the Dreamlinux 2.0 Works Edition.
This new version sports the marvelous Xfce 4.4 (4.3.91-Beta) Desktop Environment with several new improvements over the previous releases.
Dreamlinux 2.0 Works Edition also comes with the visually atractive Engage Dock, which resembles the MacOS X main panel. You can enable this feature once Dreamlinux is installed on HD, by means of the submeneu Settings, option Enable Dock (Engage).

Additional information can be found here (sorry, it's in portuguese, but have faith: one day you'll learn it !! But we're compensating you guys, this current release is in english...):

Somehow I knew that yozef was bound to come in and suggest Dreamlinux. :D

I was about to mention it, but thought he might be after a GNOME or KDE distro, as Dreamlinux is Xfce. I wasn't also sure if it supported mp3 and other stuff out of the box.

I also didn't want to take away this oppurtunity for yozef. :D

Thanks Fenyx, it is a bit scary when I become predictable. ;)

I can not hide the fact I was and am impressed with the Dreamlinux XFCE Studio Edition "live" CD

It still needs polish but it is pretty damn impressive...I look forward to their new RC

like Ubuntu it is also based on Debian.

(Ubuntu is still my main Distro of choice and probably always will be)

/* No problem. To me, "yozef" means "champion of the small, relatively less known distros". :D

I might try out Dreamlinux, too, after I'm done trying out Ubuntu (my main is Kubuntu). It seems very promising as an Xfce distro (I really don't like that they changed the default panels in Xubuntu to make look more like GNOME). I just hope that Dreamlinux doesn't make that Engage Dock a default. It's pretty, but Linux is Linux, not Mac OS X. :D */

// But back to the topic
Is it just me or is there a lack of GNOME-based Live CD distros that have built in support for restricted formats?

well I don't know about built in support for restricted formats but the "live" CD of
Morphix 0.5-pre4 Gnome (http://www.morphix.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=39&Itemid=59) is quite impressive!

Morphix 0.5-pre4 Gnome

Dave Tromp (website (http://www.davetromp.com/)) has used the 0.5-pre4 LightGUI release to create a Morph with Gnome and Debian Sarge instead: so now we have a 0.5-pre4 Morphix HeavyGUI / Gnome iso. As other people might want to give this version a try too, the community-sponsored iso has been uploaded here (http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/morphix/MorphixCombined-HeavyGUI-0.5-pre4.iso?download) (621MB), to the testing section. md5sum: 5de730d8db28d649a45ec4c88c2535ec.
Please keep in mind that this isn't an 'official' version yet and stills contain a few bugs (not) related to the 0.5-pre4 base release. There have been reports of harddisk installs failing, so this Live CD is recommended only... to be used as a Live CD :)

----------------------------------

Again, this is still too new for an install but is a beautiful gnome based "live" CD
