When I updated to Ubuntu 12.04 my printer suddenly stopped working, it's an older model, 8045D. I tried a few different "howto's" including this one: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=590793&highlight=printing+brother+printer After I followed this I then received this annoying red (minus) icon on the top right of my desktop. If I click on it I get this message: "An error occurred, please run package manager from the right click menu or apt-get in a terminal..." I then tried to be resourceful & resolve the issue on my own which lead me to this page: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-software-2/an-error-occurred-please-run-package-manager-819045/ This only made problems worse, because now, when I try to open Software Manager or "Synaptic", they crash & give me this error: "System Program Problem Detected".
