desktop launcher missing after updates installed

I'm running version 12.10
I had 12 updates showing last night 11/30/2012 I ran the updates and got the message ubuntu needed to restart - restarted and now I have no launcher only a blank desktop with wallpaper networking starts and connects, right click brings up the menu to change desktop background, ctrl/alt T also works
how do I restore my desktop - does ubuntu have a rollback or restore feature I can use to undo the updates that crashed my desktop
