Just out of curiosity, no real intent to combine the two, is there a way to install Unity components in MATE in order to combine the two desktops? Specifically the Launcher and Dash.

Dash is an independent package, but I don't think getting the Mate panel to support it would be an easy undertaking.

When Unity came out on 11.04 even though it had a classic Gnome 2 session the Unity panel was completely different and designed for supporting dash and the launcher. Mate is based on Gnome 2 so that is why I think it would be difficult.
