Folks,
I just upgraded 10.x to 12.x and now have a very unwanted DE (dash/launcher). The bar across the top is unable to anchor any apps, etc. How do you get rid of this DE and return to that of 10.x . Please point me to the help for customizing dash/launcher. I saw another thread asking about this bar across the top. It is entirely empty except for the network, speaker vol, and logout icons on the right, and the name of the launched item on the left.

Thanks!

yeah I understand . you dont want Unity and want Gnome style .

ok you can have a package like gnome-fallback session to get that
open your terminal and type this

sudo apt-get install gnome-session-fallback

and from login screen you can choose the desired DE . for more information follow this

Here you have http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1966370 an excellent guide from kansasnoob to customize (very similar to 10.04 gnome desktop) your gnome fallback desktop.

Thanks for the help! This worked, I am able to add functionality to the basic gnome DE, which is more appropriate for the system I am building. Learned a lot about gnome in the process....
