Failed to create a file system

Hi There
Currently endeavouring to install 11.10 (have disc handy) on an ex-work laptop, however it says it cannot create ext4 file system and stops.
Can I get round this, or is it perhaps some remaining level of admin restriction from it's old windows system that will stop it?

There's a limit of 4 primary partitions on old systems. Could it be ?

Can you give more details:
- what hardware?
- is there an operating system installed?
- dual boot or Ubuntu alone?
- did you verify the downloaded iso file before burning to disc?
- any special reason for choosing 11.10 and not a newer version?
