I was trying to install the JDK so i could work with java files (mostly needed to compile them) i downloaded the .tar.gz from the oracle website. gunzipped it and un-tarred it. Leaving me with the folder "~/Downloads/jdk1.7.0_09"

so now im supposed to set it as my "cd" and "./configure" right? well it didnt let me. said it was a directory. tried make and it needs a makefile. the readme sent me to an online manual that didnt really clarify where i was going wrong. i did however find the compiler, so i tested it on a hello world app. i managed to invoke javac with:

~/Downloads/jdk1.7.0_09/bin/javac \
~/Desktop/HelloWorld.java

I assume iv done something at least halfway right, because i can use the compiler. But i dont want to have to type the full pathname to the compiler every time I use it. after all, you dont need to with shell commands right? so what am i doing wrong?

where should i put the contents? should i retry the un-tar? because i still have the .tar file

PS: if i have accidentally reposted, please pm me and tell me where to go
