Trying to instal Ubuntu 12.04 on a 2007 IBM laptop I get this message saying the kernel requires a x86-64 CPU, and that I need to use a kernel appropriate for a i686 CPU. I am not sure what image I should download. Same message trying to install on a 2005 VAIO laptop.

It appears that you have downloaded the 64 bit iso, hence the error.
You will need the i386.iso for whatever version you want.

For 12.04.1 here: http://releases.ubuntu.com/12.04.1/
I presume the desktop iso if you want a GUI installer.

Thanks for the info. Looks like I did download the wrong one.
