I have a problem that I cannot understand.
My DELL laptop is a dual - HD machine with Win 7 on HD1 and Ubuntu 12.04 on HD2. Grub 1.99. Dual-boot works perfectly. (There is GRUB info on the MBR of both HD's)
All past upgrades, including 12.04, completed without any problems at all.
Upgrading to 12.10 wrecks everything, and makes the PC unbootable (stops at the GRUB prompt). The Boot-repair CD + restoring the 12.04 partition fixed the problem but I would like to be able to upgrade (now or later).
Does grub 2.xx install in a different way to 1.99 ? How do I overcome this problem ?

It may be a bug of GRUB2.00.
(12.10 includes grub2.00, while 12.04 uses grub1.99)

Have you tried to install a fresh 12.10 ?

No, that is not an option in my case (too complicated and time-consuming). I'd prefer to do a an ordinary upgrade ...
