Specifications:

System:
Windows xp professional
Version 2002
Service pack 3

Computer:
Intel(R)
Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40 GHz
2.39 GHz, 512 MB of RAM

Which would be better? Plus I have 29 GB on my hard disk and both installations require 17 GB of memory. Which should I use?

512 MB of RAM

Lubuntu would be my choice.

Definitely lubuntu if you have only 512mb of ram. Why 17GB on the hard disk? A flash install of either would take less than 5Gb and probably less than 4Gb after you get rid of all the unneeded language packs.

Also, I would think 12.04 is probably better at this point as 12.10 is still new and the obligatory big post release bug fixes update apparently has not arrived yet.

Can't go wrong (well, maybe you can) with lubuntu.

However, I'm not sure you need either 17GB of memory or disk space.
29GB of disk space is ample, though.

Lubuntu is much lighter than Ubuntu in terms of graphics, so the 512MB of RAM should be fine. Ubuntu might tax the RAM past its limit, causing slow downs or freezes.

Another vote for Lubuntu. I'm running Lubuntu on a PIII w/512 MB. RAM. Lubuntu and a Chromium or Firefox session uses around 200-240 RAM. I've compared Chromium and Firefox on 'stronger' systems and don't see a noticeable difference in response times. Chromium on the marginal machine does seem noticeably more responsive than Firefox. I still prefer Firefox though.

Standard Ubuntu is a bit heavy for older computers.

Another for Lubuntu.

I go with and am posting with Lubuntu.... see specs below...

My computer is similar, also with 512 of RAM. It runs Xubuntu 12.04 faster than WindowsXP ran when it was brand new.

I vote for Lubuntu also, but if you find it too confining or not quite what you want, I can offer some reassurance that Xubuntu is a completely viable alternative as well with specs like that. On my machine I find no noticeable difference in speed and performance between them.

My old desktop seems to have died. But it has specs similar to yours, and running Ubuntu was like riding a slug. However, my lil old EeePC netbook flies with Lubuntu, so I'd imagine your machine with Lubuntu will run fast and smooth.

Yeah, Lubuntu is my recommendation. Lubuntu. (I'm getting paid every time I type the word "Lubuntu". Ooop, did it again. Hey, what ya mean it doesn't count if it's in quotation marks? What, and in parentheses too? No fair!)

Lubuntu. :P
