Purple then black screen after install

Hello I am new to these forums so im not sure whether this is the right place :)

my problem is that i have installed ubuntu 10.12 using the windows installer and it installed fine it asked me to reboot so i did i loaded up ubuntu and all it does is show a purple screen for about a minute and then the screen just goes blank and does nothing else. I hear nothing from the speakers or anything. I am a complete novice in the installation of this so please explain it in simple terms.
