Dear All,

Greetings to all, im new to linux.
I have a toshiba satellite L100 laptop running winXP and wish to try out ubuntu ISO
as my laptop does not support boot from USB, how can i install without burning a CD?

currently my hardisk have C: and D: partition, is it possible to unzip the ISO, place it in D:\ , then format my C: and install ubuntu from dos? (since after i formatted C: it would load in dos)

i saw there is a way to use GRUB to boot the ISO,however i wish after the end installation, my laptop will boot into ubuntu automatically without prompting me to choose which to boot.

:) please share your experience if you knew my idea would work.
thanks guys

James

Unless someone can correct me (and it would actually be pleasing if they did in this case) I'm not sure it's possible as you'd need to be able to install grub first.

Just because it would be rude not to suggest this: You can buy the DVD from Canonical.
If you can't burn a DVD because you don't have a DVD burner, are you able to use a machine at school / college / work?

Again, if someone can come along and show how this is possible it would be great and save me buring DVD's (I insist on burning the full *buntu set each version).

Hi Mr_JMM, you are right, however my laptop CDROM is not in good shape, is kinda old drive(6 year old) and often have error even on simple task such as copy file from CD.

WUBI does allow me to install with dualboot, however i looking for full installation to experience the true performance.

i think there is a special download link that you can use and then just restart. i have done it for some of my friends and it wasn't working until i found the link

Ok, I've had a quick search and found the following:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2055749

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1837384

http://askubuntu.com/questions/59347/how-to-install-ubuntu-no-cd-usb

Some may be for older versions but method should still be sound.

Please Note: I haven't read them completely and not tried the methods but hopefully they'll work out for you though they may seem a little technical (I don't mean to patronise).

Could you please provide a quick summary of the method used and which if any of the links you found most useful?

Also, if you feel that your question is answerd can you mark the thread as solved?

Any questions you have about Ubuntu that are separate from the initial install, please feel free to start a thread (if no recent similar thread exists).

Have fun.
