12.10: Login as Guest Vs. User & GUI problems

Hi,

I've recently upgraded from 10.10 to 12.10. I believe I'm having the Nvidia problems but want to ask advice on something else:

When I login with my user ID the desktop environment has no menus or window controls so it's pretty much inactive. When I login as a guest everything works fine... which leads me to believe I may not have the Nvidia driver issues afterall.

Any tips/fixes I can use before I try downgrading to 11.10 with a LiveCD?

Tried it. Logged in as a guest I can get a terminal up, type and run the command. Logged in as my normal user account, I can't run a terminal using CTRL+ALT+T, but can navigate to it using the sidebar, but when it runs up I can't type into it!

Just dumped my home folder onto an external drive and will probably reinstall 11.10 from a CD tomorrow... This is the first time Ubuntu has been a PITA. Hopefully I can get a resolution soon.

Ubuntu 10.10 does not just look different from Ubuntu 12.10 but it is based on a different Gnome desktop environment. Ubuntu now uses Gnome 3 DE.

Therefore, many of the themes and icon sets that people installed prior to 12.04 cause conflicts when they upgrade. This is why many of us recommend a fresh install when going from anything prior to 11.10. And some us recommend a fresh install as best practice anyway.

Remember, the developers cannot know all the variations that people do to their systems. They can only produce an upgrade from one default installation to another default installation.
