I'm trying to install Xubuntu 12.10 on an old amd 1.5Ghz amd with 1.5G ram.
It boots from cdrom fine and you can run it quite happily from the cd.
On attempting to install it has a fatal error when the slideshow starts up and drops back to the desktop to allow me to investigate but leaves no clues at at all.
How can investigate further?

You could try going to the extra options on the installer boot screen and choose nomodeset - that helped one of my recent installs. But you may have to go back to 12.04 and use the alternative (text mode) installer there instead. They have abandoned the alternative installer in 12.10. Hopefully they will have a working installer for 13.04.

Thanks for that ibjsb4!
removing the stupid slideshow solved the problem and I now have my machine back and running like a computer!
