Hello all.

First off, I am not very new to Linux in general, but newish to Ubuntu.

I am trying to install 12.10 32-bit onto an older laptop with a SSD.

I have a 120GB OCZ Vertex-3 in a Dell Latitude E6500.

Does not matter what SATA operation I choose, IRRT, ACHI, ATA. Every time I get to the point of installing Ubuntu the computer freezes and forces me to shutdown via power button.

I have tried using a unetbootin USB drive to install and a CD to install. I have made sure I am on the most recent BIOS. The drive is obviously good since it has hosted other Linux distros as well as Windows XP/7.

Slackware 13.37, Debian 6.0.5, and Linuxmint install just fine on this laptop with ACHI but for whatever reason Ubuntu will not install. Got any ideas?

Thanks for any help.

P.S. I assume that some of you will wonder why I am moving to Ubuntu rather than sticking to an OS that has proven to work without issue. And well the simple fact is that this has become personal and because I want to install Steam beta on in.

The only reason I have windows is for Steam. Everything else I can do on Windows I can do on Linux.

I get to the point of installing Ubuntu the computer freezes So are you saying, you get the live session OK, or did you opt not to start the live session.

Is this 12.04 or 12.04.1?

Did you check the media

I never go into the live session. I saw no reason to when I knew I was going to install it.

I downloaded the 32-bit version 12.10. I apologize for the incorrect version.

I have not checked the media. Will do that now and report back.

EDIT: Disk has no errors and the live session does freeze.

Were you running 12.04 before this?
I find it better in some ways, especially graphics.

The last version of Ubuntu was 9.xx I believe. I had been using slack and windows for laptop. I will download 12.04 (not 12.04.1?) tonight and try again tomorrow.

Well after downloading, checking media, and trying to install. Ubuntu still freezes when trying to load the installer.

Any other suggestions?
