Sorry to start with such a dumb question but:
I've just started installing ubuntu 12.10, after reading quite a lot about it, and I got prompted with the following two questions:
- Encrypt the new ubuntu installation for security?
- Use LVM with the new ubuntu installation?

For the lvm I was able to find quite some info and it does sound like a benefit, but I wasn't able to find much about the encryption. More precisely, how exactly would it disservice me.

I.E. I plan to use dropbox a lot, will the encryption make any problems when trying to open files on different computers?

No problem using Dropbox on an encrypted drive/partition.
But do you really need encryption?
Some benefit of encrypting /home partition is on laptops, then in case it is stolen nobody will get your private data from the drive. But you also need to set grub password and disable recovery mode boot option.
