Wow, I'm one of the first posters on a new screenshot post thread. Well, I've gone ahead and installed Kubuntu 12.10 in place of my Ubuntu 12.04. Since I've been using KDE a lot in the last 6-8 months, I thought I'd go ahead and install the KDE-centric Kubuntu.

Full-size screenshots here:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v245/viperdvman/Screenshots/ScreenshotKubu_1.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v245/viperdvman/Screenshots/ScreenshotKubu_1a.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v245/viperdvman/Screenshots/ScreenshotKubu_1b.jpg

I decided to go back to an anime/game theme... and back to Pokemon. This time, instead of the pokemon themselves, I thought I'd make a couple of wallpapers of the Unova gym leader, Elesa, from Black & White (both the anime and the games). It took quite a bit of effort, especially when it came to hunting for some of the images I used in making these wallpapers.

I've decided to stick with ROSA Launcher for a while. I'm finding the updated versions much less buggy, and working much more smoothly with my proprietary NVidia drivers. And I've set it to activate from Docky, just like I had done woth both Takeoff Launcher and GNOME Activities. This post (here (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=11823588&postcount=67)) illustrates how I accomplish it. This post (post here (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=12070341&postcount=39)) also goes in depth.

The other screenshots show off my open KDE apps (showing off Oxygen Transparent with full blur effects) and my open ROSA Launcher.

Despite upgrading from Ubuntu 12.04 (with KDE built on top) to Kubuntu 12.10, I', pretty much sticking with the Mac OS X style interface and most of the same Plasma and Window themes. So far... not bad. New distro... though mostly an artwork and icon change.

edit: added the trash can docklet to Docky... now that it's working like it's supposed to.

Computer: Desktop
Distro: Kubuntu 12.10 64-bit
Desktop Environment: KDE Plasma 4.9.2
Plasma Theme: Amakage (from KDE-Look)
Window Theme: Oxygen Transparent (from KDE-Look)
Color Scheme: Obsidian Yellow (modified from Obsidian Coast)
Left Wallpaper: custom-made Pokemon Black & White "Elesa Electric" (16: 9 version)
Right Wallpaper: custom-made Pokemon Black 2 & White 2 "Elesa Shining Beauty" (16:10 version)
Icons: Oxygen Colors v5.3 (from KDE-Look... Red Glass color)
Dock: Docky ... features include: Anchor logo removed using gconf ; Custom launchers for ROSA Launcher widget, Plasma Activities, Dolphin, and link to my Zelda fanfiction with custom icons, all pre-made before dropping into Docky
Special Features: Dual displays, ROSA Launcher

Is that native support for different wallpapers on different desktops in Xfce? Or did you install an app to get that function? It looks great. Wish Unity and GNOME Shell would have native support for it without using Nitrogen (which doesn't work unless you turn off "Let file manager handle the desktop")

just a heads up you'll need to use xrandr to configure multiple monitors. out of the box they will be cloned.

Works fine out of the box with the NVIDIA proprietary driver using twinview. So if you have NVIDIA graphics, each monitor shows up in the desktop settings.

i'm using intel graphics everything works fine. just when i setup the dual monitors i had to use a command line. i had to run something like xrandr --output VGA1 --right-of LVDS1 to get it working. by default when you enable another monitor in xfce it's cloned. you could use a gui like grandr or lxrandr to get it working but by default no dual monitor support. At least that was the case for me. Not hard but just a heads up. Running man xrandr should be more than enough to get you going. oh both monitors show up in the desktop settings but 2 monitors are kinda useless if they both have same thing on them

What you are doing with xrandr is accomplised with the "nvidia-settings" program when you set up multiple monitors. For the NVIDIA proprietary driver, no command line input is required. (At least on my desktop)

Works fine out of the box with the NVIDIA proprietary driver using twinview. So if you have NVIDIA graphics, each monitor shows up in the desktop settings.

I also run proprietary NVidia graphics, so no worries there. Didn't even have to configure my dual monitors in Kubuntu except to arrange the monitor placement. So should work fine in Xfce... I'll have to see next time I test it out.

Still my same ol' boring Xubuntu 12.04... (Best OS Eva!) / XFCE 4.8 / Greybird Mac GTK & Borders / Elementary XFCE Dark Icons / AWN / Wallpaper is a scan of a page from Flex Mentallo, a rather bizarre four - issue comic from the 90's.

Switched to AWN this week... Have tried Cairo (too many options / glitchy), and used Docky for a long time (too few options / RUNS GREAT), but finally got around to giving AWN a serious try. It is GREAT. Smoother than Docky, faster than Cairo, and very, very gorgeous with the effects. Some of the customization options are set up kinda 'different', but I'm sold.

Installed in a snap. Updated nicely, added a bunch of my favorite PPAs. No issues at all that I can see. And this is on a 5 1/2 year old Dell Dimension E520 with onboard intel graphics and only 1 GIG of Ram. It's running like a champ. :)

i'm using intel graphics everything works fine. just when i setup the dual monitors i had to use a command line. i had to run something like xrandr --output VGA1 --right-of LVDS1 to get it working. by default when you enable another monitor in xfce it's cloned. you could use a gui like grandr or lxrandr to get it working but by default no dual monitor support. At least that was the case for me. Not hard but just a heads up. Running man xrandr should be more than enough to get you going. oh both monitors show up in the desktop settings but 2 monitors are kinda useless if they both have same thing on them

On my intel based laptop I use arandr (gui) to setup dual screens. On my desktop with nvidia & propriety drivers I just enable twinview.

Either way with xfce you can use different wallpapers, panels & docks on each display just to confirm.

So I totally removed Linux Mint and Cinnamon (huh...) and went back to dual-booting Ubuntu 12.04 (maybe i'll update soon) and... OpenSUSE 12.2! It's lovely great, with KDE and Nvidia drivers. I have to play a bit with the minimizating effects, though, because they make it all a bit slower, and if I disable them it's very ugly! I should update to KDE 4.9, although I preffer OpenSUSE over Kubuntu :)
I'll see what the heck will I do on Ubuntu; Unity or GShell...

Yep, I like it, but... I tested all the minimizating effects, all of them get laggy when I have lots of windows opened (specially GTK like Firefox or XChat)... If I disable those effects, then it's not laggy but, specially with GTK windows, when I minimize them it's a bit odd, some parts of the window appear first and then the others... Confusing, I'll try with KDE 4.9, but I really LOVE OpenSUSE... I also tried it with GNOME Shell, but OpenSUSE has KDE on its heart :)
I recommend it to all the KDE lovers, YaST will make you love your life and Zypper will make you forget apt-get and/or yum ;)

Very cool, you do make use of those workspaces, don't you ;D

You seem to have the exact opposite of my experience- when i do a desktop capture everything speeds up. I can take it down to 10fps, and it still seems sped up- any lower and you can't see window effects im using, as they become missed in the capture process..

True! I've been using GnomishBeige in GS for quite some time, but never tried GnomishDark until yesterday.

"Frogs Hair" is the one that gave me the idea. I like most things that he does, and I saw GnomishDark in one of his screenies -- if memory serves. Looked interesting, although somewhat dated.

I *think* the last update was Oct '12, so the author does a good job of keeping his themes current.

Matter of fact, now that I think about it, GnomishBeige is usually the only one that works when Gnome updates their DE -- takes everyone else a while to catch-up.

Anyway, I'm totally happy with GnomishDark in Ubu Unity! A lot of times, GS themes don't cross-over too well into Unity, you know? But, this one's a keeper! ;)

This is my Quantal-Luna built from Quantal mini.iso. I used the Quantal repos and the Quantal applications of Elementary OS Team.

And mine is not Beta, as far as Quantal goes and as far as the Elementary OS Team won't break their Quantal applications.

I got rid of Midori and will get rid of Plank. I've got rid of Noise. Rhythmbox is in. No time to learn "new" apps, when the old tested apps work very well.

You can read about it here:

Everything works superbly!

You have a newer kernel than I do on Arch. We (typically) only get release versions of software. Course, after January 10th, you'll be behind the curve again (and some Sid packages are already older than ours). But then you (you personally) will catch us up again once the raccoon is released and work on sacred spaghettimonster begins.

We're on kernel 3.6.6-1 now.

If anyone else wants to test 13.04, there are daily builds already that you install the same way as a release. Again, not "safe." (won't cause you to die, but will at least cause you to swear and may possibly destroy everything you hold dear... like, if you are a really shallow person and don't have good data hygiene. gross).

So how unstable is it ala a ship that is about to sink or not quite...
The word "unstable" with reference to software actually means "changes often." Many people use Debian Unstable as their primary desktop OS and it doesn't crash all the time or anything. The daily releases are extremely "Unstable" in this regard.

On the other hand, they shouldn't break any more often than the alpha releases, if you are used to running those. Not recommended as a primary OS, but should be fine to play with if you install it on a different partition. If you are not comfortable repartitioning your harddrive, you probably shouldn't be running a dev release.

Let's put it this way... Ubu dev branches are brittle and easily broken, especially when you're running "off the reservation" like I am (hacking the DE, and so forth).

Personally, I look forward to the breakage. Stress is exhilarating, when you're on top it. It's only when stress rolls over you, that it kills you.

If you aren't into chaos and mayhem, I strongly suggest staying away from dev releases! ;)

Linux 3.7 is almost fully cooked, then I'll be off to 3.8, as soon as the rcs hit the gits.

Things are moving very quickly, right now. I installed a new kernel every day, during the past week -- had to keep clearing them out, because my root partition was getting dangerously full.

Anyway, it isn't a race. I just enjoy testing kernels -- that's all. It's sort of a fetish with me. LoL! :D

What is that dock on the right and how did you get there?

You have so many nice screens, can't you do a tutorial of them?:)

::lolflag: that IS my DeviantArt page/slash gallery. and the description on the linked page explains what the "dock" is. which isn't a dock at all.

As far as the SalineOS shot, what looks like 3D panels on the top and bottom are actually part of the wallpaper I made. then I placed transparent panels over them. SalineOS is actually XFCE. hope that helps.

i looked in your Devianart gallery, the first time I saw your screenshots. You are pretty good!
If that's not a dock, are they links to applications?

Good day!
"the icons on the right edge are in a task bar of a transparent lxpanel set to icons only with spacing."

the task bar shows which applications are open. if there are no applications open there are no icons on the right. if you minimize an application that is open you can click on it's icon and the application's window will show.

New screenshot posted here... Windows style for a little bit before I go back to my usual Mac OS X style.

Full-size screenshots here:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v245/viperdvman/Screenshots/ScreenshotKubu2.jpg

I ditched Kubuntu 12.10 and installed Kubuntu 12.04 for a few reasons. 1) It's an LTS. So whatever one I try out, I can always come back to the LTS for the next 5 years. 2) A number of apps (AWN, Kompozer, snes9x-gtk, to name a few... some are available via PPA or compile... some either aren't or are a major PITA to compile) were dropped in Quantal. 3) Kubuntu didn't change much between 12.04 and 12.10 outside of KDE and the Linux Kernel, both which can easily be installed in 12.04 via PPA or repos.

Don't get me wrong, I loved running Quantal, but the missing apps made me decide to go back to Precise.

For now, I'm running the default Windows style interface, but will be switching back to my usual Mac OS X style interface soon enough.

This is my desktop, not too fancy, using Faenza and wallch with a folder full of wallpapers. http://bit.ly/TeRgka But when I press F9 for the widget layer (from compiz) this happens. http://bit.ly/Qdq207
I just think if Conky's going to be useful you might as well make it so you don't have to minimize everything to see it.

Nice! How did you achieve that gnome menu?

The "Applications" menu is the default XFCE menu, but you can customize it to display a caption after the icon ("Applications" in example). "Places" ("Lugares") is the XFCE Places Applet, customized for showing only a caption. And the System ("Sistema") isn't really a menu, it's a launcher to XFCE settings, configured also to not show the icon and only show caption.
It's not exactly as GNOME 2 was, but I preffer it over the default XFCE layout (too less space for the windows, IMO)
