Ubuntu Install Stall

New member that is just versed enough to botch things up...I'm getting an error message and cannot download updates since I upgraded the most recent Ubuntu. I'm being told "The Package System is broken" and I have to disable "third party repositories" and my installed packages have unmet dependencies. Can anyone please decipher this for a moron. Let us look at the specific errors. Please post the output from the terminal codes:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgradeand as you did an upgrade...let's see what your /etc/apt/sources.list contains.

cat /etc/apt/sources.listFurther advise depends on the above outputs.

We were all novices at one time...I apologize for my assuming in delaying a resolution.

Any way...back on topic. I see no fault in your sources.file . But I have no idea as to what the "[Ubuntu 9.10 _Karmic Koala_ - Release i386 (20091028.5)" entries are doing in here in the first place. As they are "commented" out, they have no effect.

On the other two terminal commands. Can not tell if the entire output was posted, try again please.

To open a command line interface (cli) ->depress the keys ctl and alt and t simultaneously
enter the terminal code:

sudo apt-get updatecopy and paste this output same as you did the cat output
then also the terminal out put of:

sudo apt-get upgradeThe use of "sudo" grants you administrative authority to make changes to your system (among other things) --requires your password -> will get no response to the screen. (security reasons).
Make sure the complete output of the commands are posted.

Still looking for the errors that are generated to troubleshoot the update failure in your original post //
