What desktop environment is used in Ubuntu 10.04? I have loaded 12.04 & 12.10 and do NOT like the desktop. Will find a way to go back.

Install and use the Gnome Classic environment.

10.04 used gnome2, which has been discontinued.
12.04 uses Unity by default, which some people love and others hate.
Gnome2 is going to disappear so eventually you will have to cut the cord and find a replacement.

There are alternatives that can be loaded from your current 12.04 to try out if you don't like unity:
lubuntu-desktop, xubuntu-desktop (that I use), kubuntu-desktop. There is also a gnome-3 desktop but I can't remember the package name.

The methods in psychocats to revert to Gnome 2 or 3 didn't work. On a fresh install from an .iso (CD) these options of gnone-session-fallback & gnone-shell do not exist in the Ubuntu Software Center. So I installed 10.04 on a blank drive, installed the nvidia drivers, and then did an update to 12.04 (4 hours) This worked for about a minute, but never gave me the option to install nvidia video drivers so it crashed and will NOT reboot. I give up on 12.04 after six tries. Version 10-04 does everything I need!

i have actually had it auto install the nvidia drive, usually when i check the 3ed party plug-ins/restricted extras during install
you would probably prefer xubuntu to unity, i do intend to make a guide for setting it up like gnome2
i have managed to get compiz to auto start in it, though compiz is full of bugs in 12.10 (paint fire/water effects/screenshot,expo (vortex) are broken, no plugins extra :( )

@RichardJohnson,

Install Debian version6 (stable), It'll keep you happy for the next year, as it still uses gnome2.23

You have to enable the Universe repository then refresh your package list:

Don't know if the psychocats instructions covered that; sorry.

You can make 12.04 look and behave almost (but not entirely) like the old Gnome desktop:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1966370

It's considerably more difficult in 12.10, in fact I find it best to begin with this in 12.10:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2073181

But I really don't have everything worked out with that yet, partly because some of the needed theming and app PPA's have not yet been updated for 12.10.

Also 12.04 is supported until April 2017 whereas 12.10 is only supported until April 2014 ;)
