Hi,

I have been asking this many times on the mailing list before. Now, I have translated my wishes to Launchpad so hope I/we can see this on the next release:

1- Adding the Trash to Lubuntu Desktop

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lubuntu-meta/+bug/1072108

2- Adding numlockx to Lubuntu by default

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lxsession/+bug/1072114

3- Add a lock screen option for Lubuntu

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lxsession/+bug/612332

The last one is 2 years and 2 months old. Sad but true.

Thanks a lot!

I'm not sure about LXDE but, in Xfce, you can associate terminal commands to keyboard shortcuts. In other words, associating the command "xscreensaver-command -lock" (without the quotes) to a shortcut such as Ctrl+Alt+L should then lock your screen.

This (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu/Boot_Install_Login#I_want_to_bind_a_key_to_lock_my _screen.2C_how_do_I_do_it.3F) is how to create a Keyboard Shortcut in Lubuntu.

However, the one I reported should serve another purpose which is a Graphical Approach for new comers and those who are not familiar yet with Terminal. On another words, the easiest way to Lock your Screen (http://forum.lxde.org/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=31300).

I would also like to rec menulibre, a ppa is here https://launchpad.net/~menulibre-dev/+archive/devel

It was created for the ubuntu app challenge. It is a very lightweight menu editor, and as LXDE doesn't have a menu editor, and Lubuntu doesn't ship with one, I think this would be great.

Yes, we don't have an GUI approach to edit the menu, we do this: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu/Documentation/EditingTheMenu

I'm not sure how lightweight that will be? our developers need to decide that. We are so careful when it comes to add/remove features, that is why some features are still not yet in Lubuntu. Perhaps we are too much careful? :lolflag:

looks good, and in my opinion a graphical menu editor is really needed for the distribution, you can't ask users to manage their menu manually .

I used to recommend lxmed (http://lxmed.sourceforge.net) but menulibre seems lighter.

I have used done that many times, it just isn't as easy as a gui for new users. And I can understand being careful, however this is something that is "needed" for an easy to use DE experience.

I used to use LXmed, but I don't see it being on the CD. LXmed is a java program, and that would mean pulling all the java depends. Menulibre is python, so no new depends (I believe), and it weighs in at just 295.5 KiB.

Hi all, I would like to have in the menu a action that would put the multimedia stuff in, Like Lubuntu-restricted-extras and video codes that way a new user could up loaded there and not have to spend time figuring it, or living the the distro because they think is a bad OS. :P

More Themes for Lubuntu, the gnome-themes not look well.

Remove the F11 for fullscreen (lxde default) conflics with soma programs (firefox).

For the next version of Lubuntu:

1. Fix to LXPanel system tray expansion problem:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lxpanel/+bug/990619
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lxpanel/+bug/846878

2. Delay to LXPanel pop-out / auto hide feature.

3. Graphical menu editor in default install

I really like Lubuntu, it turned my old comp into a usable machine again.

The things I do not like are NO KEYBINDING editor????!!!??

here is an old on that looks rather abandoned... though it might still be nice
http://code.google.com/p/obkey/

(not that I mind opening leafpad and fiddling with xml)

I think xcompmgr should be easier to enable for new users (have a settings dialog that has an 'Enable Compositing' button, that will check if xcompmg is installed, and install it if it is not, and enable it and cause it to be in the autostart...)

The "Places" Menu is mediocre.... I would like it to function more like Gnome2 or Xfce4 where it lists the actual files not JUST directories, though I REALLY like the open in terminal option. It would be nice to have USB/CD/DVD mounted and displayed in that list as well.

And it would be nice to have the AppMenu display a name (I just like the old gnome2 look personally..)

Why does it come with Chromium?? Midori throttles Chromium in terms of speed, and lightness. I would forget Chromium was even launched by the time it lurches onto the screen. Firefox loads faster than that.

And better default art. Better menu button, more gentle colours. Not such an icy and foriegn looking system. Most UI now have a somewhat transparent panel, I think the black panel with opacity is something Lubuntu should consider.

But whatever it is my opinion, I go so far as to edit the themerc file and make my own window buttons so I am blessed by LXDE whether it looks nice by default or not, as I can tweak it myself....

GTK3 versions of Clearlooks, Crux, Industrial, Mist, Raleigh, Redmond and ThinIce themes would be nice, then the default themes would work on GTK2 and 3 programs...

Do we really need xscreensaver when xfce4-power-manager handles screen blanking and power options...

Little tweaks like adding "vm.swappiness = 15" to /etc/sysctl.conf would stop hard-disk mashing when running on low memory machines, also adding "noatime" to entries in /etc/fstab by default would help access speeds...

November 13th, 2012, 02:09 AM
Faster... It seems that over time, the new releases get slower than the last. I don't know if that's inherent in the core Ubuntu install or if it's LXDE....

Yeah, faster.

You need to install Lubuntu on your usb device, the same way you would to a hard drive, that way any changes you make, including updates, will survive after a reboot.

Well, IMHO not much has changed since 12.04 in terms of developers/contributors, but we've got a long time until 14.04, so you never know. :)

Make a live USB/CD on "media1" (i.e. a USB stick or CD).

Plug "media2" (i.e. a bigger USB stick) into the computer.

Boot "media1".

Install, selecting "media2" as the target drive.

Boot from "media2".

I wouldn't mind if Lubuntu 13.04 comes with fewer apps and lighter artwork.

Also, why there are several icon sets in /usr/share/icons? I see:
elementary
elementary-mono-dark
gnome
hicolor
Humanity
Humanity-Dark
locolor
lubuntu

It looks like there's some redundancy there.

This isn't a question for the Cafe, I'd suggest you start a thread in ABT (http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=326), or General Help (http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=327) asking how to install Ubuntu to a usb device.

There is a solution already for most of the issues here (locked screen, menu editing, keyboard shortcuts, flat themes, lubuntu-restricted-extras, lower RAM usage) and a lot more (faster boot, autostart, disable unneeded services, autologin...): It is called Quelitu 12.10.

It is based on Lubuntu and available as an ISO or an add-on (switch package) to Lubuntu (i.e. no need to reinstall).

It also has advanced features like Qx Hub (a Dash-like feature in a light distro!) and an amazing (and lighter) E17 interface in addition to the default LXDE.

As a second step to the installation process, Qx Easy Configuration makes it easy to install restricted extras, change software, reduce boot time, enable/disable services, add speller/language, change themes, fonts, wallpaper, and desktop environments, select single-click-to-open, etc. right after installing your system.

See video:
http://youtu.be/HCspWke_RII

Release Notes page:
http://wavesofthefuture.net/computers/download-telecharger-descargas-free-gratuit-gratis-quelitu.shtml

Lubuntu is great but does suffer from lack of development. Lubuntu 12.10 uses about 20 MB more RAM than 12.04 once installed. A bug was filed about that months ago but Lubuntu has yet to confirm whether it will be fixed or not... that it takes so long is disappointing...

Don't really understand this. If I want to delete something I want it gone, not to be moved to some trash folder which I later have to empty again or simply sitting there, forgotten. IMO trashcan is the most useless feature in all DEs (perhaps a copy of Windows' recycle bin?) I always configure Pcmanfm to delete permanently by default.

The trash bin is designed for trash yet there are some instances that you might ACCIDENTALLY delete a file.

Yeah I second that. I don't understand why OpenVPn is not supported out of the box in Ubuntu (not just lubuntu) You just need to download a package from synaptic, but still...

Use attym instead of Pidgin (If they still use it) so that gnome stuff won't be in the distro anymore. Besides, MSN Messenger protocol is axed pretty much now; and it's the only protocol that makes attym act funny. (File transfers, etc. mainly.)

As for numlockx. I'm guessing your keyboard doesn't have lock lights? Or is a laptop with improper lighting support?

I agree that it is very awesome to have. However, on a low powered system it REALLY eats up the cpu. As Lubuntu is supposed to be a light system, I can see it not being a default. Though I install that before anything else.

1. Would be nice to have build-essential in there to start.
2. Some of the common wireless chipset drivers seem to be..stale? and have been for a couple of releases. This usually necessitates black listing when the user compiles the current driver which is...not optimal, nor obvious that it needs to be done. (A lot of responders on the forum threads don't know that this might need to be done)

I wish the post-installation bootloader/boot process would be more reliable. It seems off-putting that one can boot off the live-CD, clean install without issue and then have the bootloader fail.

That's pretty surprising, I would want to see it as a default option as it almost seems necessary in Synaptic I guess the Software Center is being designed to replace it though.

As for my wishlist for Lubuntu 13.04 I really have none that haven't been stated so far, most of my gripes are probably with LXDE or Openbox something I know the Lubuntu people can't do much about. Keep up the good work guys!

EDIT:
I actually forgot this cuz I did this myself, but they should add the volume notification for volume changing. It's xfce4-volumed.

That's pretty surprising, I would want to see it as a default option as it almost seems necessary in Synaptic I guess the Software Center is being designed to replace it though.

I have an old 1.8ghz celeron with 512mb ram, and it maxes the CPU, and makes the computer all but unresponsive, IE the mouse motion is choppy as heck, if I can even move it. I am guessing this is a first gen celeron, though (or something of the sort), as the celeron in my Eeepc was at 900mhz, and didn't do near as bad.

I still add it as soon as I install, as your right in it is "necessary". However, if that happened to a random user who didn't know, they could freak out. Even more so since this DE is designed for slower computers, it probable happens a bit. I do use it on my 3.7ghz dual core too, and I don't even notice it. I am guessing it uses a feature that is in newer CPU's, that have to be emulated on older ones. Thus really slow.

Personally I use indicator-sound + Pavucontrol. I love being able to scroll my mouse wheel over the indicator to raise/lower the sound.

Personally, I've been waiting for this for SO LONG :)

It will be only for 13.04.

I have asked Julien why not to have a .desktop file as per my comment on that reported bug above, he answered:

We can't do it with the .desktop because it's harder to get translation using this way. Also, you can't check if the program to lock is available on your system if you use a .desktop, but using lxsession-logout, you can.

This is FYI :)
I thought to update this so followers will be up-to-date :)

I actually just updated the CPU, so I can't do that. However, I have the CPU in my hand right now, and did a little googling. The one I had the trouble with was this CPU: http://ark.intel.com/products/27178/Intel-Celeron-Processor-2_40-GHz-128K-Cache-400-MHz-FSB#infosectionpackagespecifications.
