No plans to stop using Unity in the near future. There will be a spin however that offers Gnome-shell as default.

Ubuntu is not moving away from Unity for the foreseeable future. They've been burnt before by relying too much on upstream Gnome developers.

From a styling point of view, we think in terms of quadruples: this next release starts a cycle of four, which will culminate in 14.04 LTS.

From Mark Shuttleworth's blog at the start of the Qunatal Quetzal development cycle.

The purpose of Unity is to provide a unified user interface that can be on desktop PCs, tablet PCs, mobile phones, Televisions. A lot of work still needs to be done. But this will show you where things are going:

The old look is exactly that that - an old look. Some people prefer that look. That is their choice.

If Ubuntu had not switched to Unity we would be using Gnome 3 shell. Ubuntu is already sitting on top of Gnome 3 but the user interface would be Gnome 3 shell. This is what it looks like:

http://www.gnome.org/gnome-3/

It is what a new install of Ubuntu would look like if Unity was not present.

There are more traditional desktop options available for those would like to use them. Unity has been default since 11.04 and improves with each release and I don't think it is going away as written above. Users are accountable for the software they install and should have no reason to complain if they have done their homework.

Unity is here to stay. The only real thing to come will be moving from X11 to Wayland, eventually.
