I was just trying an audio experiment (3.7xxRC2kernel) . I hovered and clicked over a file and then chose Audacious rather than Rythmbox and I got that dark-shadow fader that used to happen all the time with Lucid and maveric.

I think that's what happens with compiz when a window is busy.
