Hey guys,

I was going to get a cheap Chinese tablet like the Ainol fire, but since the Ubuntu on the nexus 7 announcement I think I'll get that if any.

So basically I'm wondering if anyone can hazard a guess at how much space Ubuntu would take up on it? The 8Gb model is what I'd get but since it has now way to expand memory (WHY GOOGLE WHHHHHY!?) I'm wondering if it isn't enough? I think it would be fine for the less than serious work which would go on it.

Are canonical bringing the foot print of the system down much more?

Also on a side note, how quickly (if at all) would developers get Ubuntu working on other tablets in the same way as on the Nexus 7?

You may be OK, but you should read this (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Nexus7/KnownIssues).

Well firstly, might be worth waiting a week or two as it looks like google are releasing a 32GB version and dropping the price of the 16GB to the old 8GB price.

Secondly, are you expecting to actually run ubuntu as on OS on the Nexus 7?
Trying to interact with unity in it's current form would be very fiddly and not really realistic. I understand it is meant for working on the "core" of ubuntu to get it working with mobile devices better and is a long way off being a usable OS for the N7.

Yeah I probably will be waiting, you know a christmas sort of thing.

I wouldn't use it as a full os for the Nexus 7, I'd just like to be able to follow the updates and have the ability to utilise it.

For the foreseeable future Ubuntu on the Nexus 7 is nothing more than a development and testing platform. If you want to have a functional tablet better to not do this for now.

Flashing to Ubuntu apparently takes about 25 minutes and back to Android about a minute (http://benjaminkerensa.com/2012/10/26/ubuntu-on-nexus-7) so I guess one could pop in and out occasionally just to see how it is progressing :)
