I'm on xubuntu 12.04, here is a screenshot of the Volume Control window.

The controls do not seem to be affected by GTK+. I'm using the Clearlooks theme but I've noticed others do work.

There's GTK2 and GTK3. Some progs use one, some use the other. Clearlooks only works in one of them.

This similar theme works in both - it's the one I've begun using:
http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Clearwaita?content=145210l
Unzip it and copy the resulting folder to /usr/share/themes.

use themes which have been created to work for gtk2 and gtk3. the default theme will do this, the default theme in the distro Linux Mint xfce will also. there is another here (http://xfce-look.org/content/show.php/Ambiance+%26+Radiance+Themes+for+Xfce%2BLXDE?conte nt=146674).

i can upload the mint theme.

remember you can choose separate window decorations, it does not have to be the default from the above theme packs.
