A while ago I tried to configure gnome with compiz. This left both compiz and gnome completely unusable on my system. Completely removing and reinstalling both gnome and compiz did not improve the situation: despite my attempts to remove all configuration, the some config persisted.
Currently, when I log into gnome I have multiple panels taking up all the space on my screen.

Is there a way to get gnome back to a usable state without re-installing the operating system?
