I don't fully understand the linked-to article, but it sure sounds scary. I was just about to install Ubuntu on a new machine; should I opt for ext3 instead of ext4 to avoid this problem?

No need to set to ext3. Just do not install 12.10.
Ubuntu 12.04 has stable 3.2 kernel with no bug on ext4.

It's not only a problem of hard reboot, but you cannot reboot twice in very short time.

I haven't had any problems with 12.04, but then I only do hard shutdowns very rarely - UPS + super stable system = win.

Does this (http://news.softpedia.com/news/EXT4-Bug-Fixed-in-Linux-Kernel-3-4-18-LTS-Download-Now-304562.shtml) mean it's now safe to install 12.10 with ext4? Or should I wait a bit yet?
