Either should work OK with 512 of ram, but if you choose the live CD you can check that it will work on the machine before you install..

But according to this page: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu/Alternate_ISO

On the 'Desktop ISO', the graphical installer Ubiquity (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Ubiquity) requires about 700-750 MB of RAM to run. This requirement does not include the RAM required to run the LiveCD (200 MB). So running the graphical installer by using the option 'Try Lubuntu' in the installer requires more RAM than selecting it from the boot menu. So what's the deal?

Whatever the wiki says, I am running Lubuntu 12.04 on a machine with 512 MB ram and I installed that with the live CD, not the alternate version. I can not imagine that 12.10 is very much different from 12.04, so I suspect they are simply covering themselves in case some users can not manage to do it with the 512MB.
