Yeah, I don't get that, either. And then it's always presented as crossing gender barriers, as if that was the same thing. It's like there's this weird, unstated equivalence between the two that's being drawn.

Yea, and the whole man points/card/whatever stuff sounds like a invention by college duds in/from a frat house.

I'm curious though as to how this gender categorization of stuff started.

QIII

I prefer the common equus asinus africanus (since I can't use a common term for them - "a" followed by "ss" -- without it getting replaced by three stars, I have to use the scientific one) or "donkey" (which, strangely, does not get replaced by six stars) to a cartoon pony.

So, when my wife is angry with me, do you think she says "You equus asinus africanus!"? Of course not. She uses the three letter version! :)

Copper Bezel

Would I be considered a higher ape?

Yeah, I thought that phrase was a thing to exclude gibbons. It's apparently just not a thing (the phrase I meant is great apes) and there are apparently monkeys that show a gender split between "hunter" and "nurturer" inclinations, anyway, so it's a moot point. I'm guessing that KiwiNZ was referring to specialized "labor" roles, hunting and gathering, for which his figure sounds rightish without looking it up.

The resurgence of My Little Pony has whooshed straight over my head. Maybe it's cos MLPs were plastic toys aimed at little girls when I were a lad. But the man-pony thing seems ominous somehow... and the way men who love MLP have a name - bronies - I don't think it's some kind of subconscious homophobia that drives me to back away slowly from the subject; but I usually have time for the absurd.

Bronie-phobia... is it a hate crime yet?

Clangers, Bronies, I fear for our future.

Bronies raised $33,000 on the MLP subreddit for charity, plus $35,000 for Humble Brony Bundle (which put their money through the Humble Bundle and its charities it supported). Then there's all the smaller charity fund raising that goes on as well as the community service a lot of local brony groups are going out and doing.

There's more to it than watching a cartoon for little girls.

...the TV series and concept is rubbish and a blatant commercial ploy to separate children and or their parents from their pocket money.

Not to take away the magic of the recent MLP reboot, but it was purposely put forth as a project to set up imperfect characters that stumble about in flaws - then pull together despite their flaws. Throw in a lot of popular sci-fi and fantasy satire, all brought to you by the creators of the Power Puff Girls - and there you go - a cult following of bronies.

Not that I am a bronie or would admit to it, but as a father, MLP is the most tolerable of the kids shows and of course my daughter's favorite :)

Early 80's the concept of making cartoons to sell products started in the good old US of A. It got so bad that a series made by Hot Wheels got canceled and some laws ammended because all they did was make a 20 minute long add.

There has been some good shows in between however and I was/am a big fan of some of the stuff created by and for Cartoon Network... making good shows to have people watch it so you can make money, novel idea :p

Ignoring the extremists (no fanboism), i think this show (the newest) is ok. The writer curiously inserted references to pop culture and other shows adding some geek factor; like that episode with star trek/wars scenes (Q voice acting, lol).

I only learned about it because people made such a fuzz. And no, it has no relation to the older show, feels more like powerpuff girls.

You can watch it on youtube, the whole thing is there. Really hated that episode with that "leap of faith", but most episodes are fine.

Early 80's the concept of making cartoons to sell products started in the good old US of A. Not too sure about that, but TOEI was doing it in Japan with Tetsuwan Atom (with a breakfast cereal) back in the 60ies. According to a representative, they always make products (usually toys) outside of animation to sell along a show. Nowdays its even more evident with the (japanese) music labels involved.

On the other hand the whole point of star wars was simply that, to sell toys. Mr Lucas never expected it to be so successful on its own...

This I wholeheartedly agree with, and the fact that you can find all the episodes free and easy on Youtube only inflates the show's distribution to even more audiences who normally wouldn't come across it. Although if you ask me, the characters in the show itself look better than what's usually the toy line. :P

In all honesty, I actually watched the first episode, (My little cousin forced me to watch it with him, since he was curious after seeing all the brony memes.) and it was one of the best examples of vector animation I've seen, but oh God my eyes!

Every manly cell in my body was writhing with agony and screaming for mercy; the theme song especially triggered that reaction inside me. The animation was amazing and it even had its humorous moments, but I couldn't bear to watch another episode. It's cute, just too much cuteness all in one sitting for me, like tons of sugar dumped in the lemonade. =P

Wow, not sure about that observation

Take Joseph Campbell, some old Samaria movies, old black and white sci-fi serials, a hunger to develop and incorporate new special effects tech... Mix it all together and get a huge story that goes way beyond the length of one movie. So divide up the story, hope the first does OK, and you can make the next segment of the story... and of course the rest is history.

I was a kid when Star Wars came out, believe me, they were in no way prepared with merchandise for that first release. I waited a year to get my first Star Wars item. The success of that first Star Wars movie did influence how the industry would tie in merchandise from that point on. Battle Star Galactica, Space 1999, Six Million Dollar Man, Bionic Woman... whether film or tv, they all started cranking out the toys and t-shirts then :)

Now, all you haters, let me point out one thing.
You are all making biased opinions. I would think Linux users in general are more educated then their Windows and Mac counterparts because of how Linux has little commercial backing, it requires you to think for yourself sometimes.
You have to approach the show with an open mind if you want to see the good in it.
Just because a guy goes outside the gender norm does not mean he is instantly gay. Plus, it's also called being sexist. When girls like things targeted at guys and like it, you don't see people calling them lesbians or transgenders. However, the same can not be said for guys who like things targeted at girls, who are instantly given social backlash by n00bs who don't care about gender equality.
The fact is, this show has high quality Flash animation (that's right-Adobe Flash), an actual storyline, interesting characters, great music numbers (have you ever heard the song Winter Wrap-Up?), and little shoutouts to the community (such as Derpy Hooves and DJ-PON3). Plus, you have to give them credit for the awesome personalities on ponies like Fluttershy (yay!). You also seem to have forgotten all the mythology they threw in (with Ursa Majors and Minors and Phoenixes to start the list) and the references (there is even a reference to the ending scene of Star Wars Episode IV).
The show was created by Lauren Faust, who also created the Power Puff Girls (which also attracted an audience outside the targeted demographic), and worked on Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends as the writer, character designer, animation director, and storyboard editor. They gathered many talented people to work on this show, such as Daniel Ingram on the music, Tara Strong as Twilight Sparkle, Ashleigh Ball as Rainbow Dash and Applejack, and Amy Keating Rogers as one of the writers (who also worked on Dexter's Laboratory and the Fairly OddParents). To say this was produced by a crappy team is a complete lie.
To say it is a show made to market the My Little Pony series is only partly true. Discovery and Hasbro created the Hub network in a joint venture, and needed some OC (original content, for people who are completely out of touch with Internet subcultures). They knew how crappy the previous iterations of the franchise were, and wanted to make it better. And make it better they did.
The fact is, this is probably the only clean, wholesome show on TV that is actually good yet is not all about how "awesome" life is by getting wasted at parties, cheating on your wife with some shady girl you paid $20, and nearly overdosing on cocaine, starting a huge bar fight due to intoxication and stupidity, and repeating the cycle every night.
Even though it may seem girly and stupid for a guy to like it (I know that was what I was thinking when I first heard about it), it is a genuinely good show that does not rely on dirty and inside jokes to get people to laugh-they even manage to throw in some comedic moments that everyone can laugh at.
My favorite pony is Rainbow Dash-athletic, beautiful, and fast. Each character has their own unique personality, one that everybody can relate to (I am most like Twilight Sparkle-at one time, I was all study no play, now I manage to balance the two). And this show not only sets a standard of how we should act with others by providing life lessons (which it does in a non-intrusive way, rather than a "Hey kids, today we learned it's not good to steal" kind of way that is on many children's shows), it sets a standard for good, clean, and high quality content.

Some points to ponder... Just because someone doesn't share your opinion about something doesn't make them a hater. Your opinion is also biased. Someone using Linux and equating that to how they should think about things sounds like an apple and oranges comaprison.

Thus far most posts have been people stating how they felt about something, this is the first post that is attacking others. I am surprised the thread lasted as long as it has before degrading... Let us make this the last of these posts.

Following the hourly payment totals were the 'allowances' (wet weather, clothing, meals, etc etc)

I am thinking of asking Mark for an allowance for UF staff members to compensate us for looking at threads like this.

Perhaps the Admins could agree on and nominate a worthy charity and a $$ amount target that, when reached, would result in the removal of all references to ....... and all ..... themed avatars.

A mate of mine in the '70s had a holiday job with the Railways and showed me his payslip.
Following the hourly payment totals were the 'allowances' (wet weather, clothing, meals, etc etc)
and an allowance that had us falling about laughing...a 'no allowance allowance'.

In other words if you had done nothing that week that would result in an allowance being paid then, as compensation, you were paid an allowance for not getting an allowance.

The "Permit to be ill" I remember seeing had remarkably similar questions to this one (http://www.netinteraction.com/rhl/960611.htm). I believe that there was an option by the question relating to address that mentioned kaftans.

This is the thing, they were overwhelmed. I'm positive its written somewhere (old FAQ/interview?), the first movie was intended to attract buyers to the toys. Trying to remember i think Lucas was targeting 10 year olds, never expecting adults to be interested at all.

I've just been out trying to find a tree to chop down. Unfortunately I got lost - tried not to ask for directions but gave in, only to be kyboshed by a massive attack of wind which offended any potential direction-givers. As I returned home, my blasted bicycle failed me, of course I knew how to fix it but my tools were not up to the job and I had to carry the thing back in pieces. And to top it all, I think I have contracted TB from one of the local badgers.

Damn. That's worth at least five points, I think. It's too bad you couldn't kill and eat the badger - that could have doubled your score (so long as you didn't oven bake it with cracker-crumb coating, which would have taken you back to zero again.)
