G'Day everyone,

I've got a few broken packages on my system that I cannot seem to fix.

Output from dpkg

gaurav@gaurav-gamma:~$ sudo dpkg --configure -a
Setting up man-db (2.6.1-2) ...
dpkg: error processing man-db (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Setting up byobu (5.17-0ubuntu1) ...
dpkg: error processing byobu (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
man-db
byobu

If I try to autoremove them, I get

gaurav@gaurav-gamma:~$ sudo apt-get autoremove
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 33 not upgraded.
2 not fully installed or removed.
After this operation, 0 B of additional disk space will be used.
Setting up man-db (2.6.1-2) ...
dpkg: error processing man-db (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Setting up byobu (5.17-0ubuntu1) ...
dpkg: error processing byobu (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
man-db
byobu
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

Can anyone tell me how I can fix this? I don't want to risk upgrading to 12.10 before I can. Thanks!

Installing 12.10 most likely would fix this problem because 12.10 uses a different set of repositories to 12.10 but that is not the way to fix problems. Is it?

The issue seems to be with byobu. Have you tried re-installing byobu? Why do you have it installed? It is not installed by default on my 12.10 Ubuntu. Which version of Ubuntu are you using?

Regards.

sudo dpkg -r man-db
sudo dpkg -r byobu
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install -f

No, byobu is the problem because I recently tried to install juju using apt-get. The problems started with man-db and flashplugin-installer. I removed flashplugin-installer, and I temporarily removed man-db as well. But now when I try to install man-db it still remains broken.

The output of the whole process, if it helps.

What would be the reason behind

dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/libc6_2.15-0ubuntu10.3_amd64.deb (--unpack):

I get the same error for all of my broken packages. If I try to re-install `man-db`, I get the same error. What can be causing this? Even if I run `dpkg --configure -a --debug 777` I get no further detail why the pre-installation script is failing for them.

Should I re-install the libc package?

You've got libc6 version 2.15-0ubuntu10.2 installed, but it should be 2.15-0ubuntu10.3. Try to download and force upgrade them first (mind that you've got both i386 and amd64 architectures). After that repeat the update normally.
It would be better to disable all additional repositories (ppa's, backports and the rest) so that it was easier to trace the problem.

Can you please tell me how I should go about it? I cannot apt-get remove libc6, and install -f gives me the errors I posted above. How can I correct them? Thanks.

do the same
dpkg -r for the above two packages and follow the remaining instructions .

do the same for the above two packages and follow the remaining instructions .
I cannot dpkg -r libc6 because heaps of packages depend upon it. I cannot -r /var/cache/apt/archives/libc6_2.15-0ubuntu10.3_amd64.deb and sudo rm -rf /var/cache/apt/archives/libc6_2.15-0ubuntu10.3_i386.deb because then if I do apt-get install -f, I get the same error again.

How do I get rid of this web of unmet dependencies?

You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
libc6 : Breaks: libc6:i386 (!= 2.15-0ubuntu10.3) but 2.15-0ubuntu10.2 is to be installed
libc6:i386 : Depends: libc-bin:i386 (= 2.15-0ubuntu10.2)
Breaks: libc6 (!= 2.15-0ubuntu10.2) but 2.15-0ubuntu10.3 is to be installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution).

So 2.15-0ubuntu10.2 is needed to satisfy libc6-bin's dependency, but then the broken packages need 2.15-0ubuntu10.3

How do I go about this? Thanks.

Download packages with proper versions from here (http://packages.ubuntu.com/).
And use dpkg command to remove conflicting packages and installing the downloaded ones. You may need --force option. So, to remove libc6-i386 package command would be:

sudo dpkg -r --force-depends libc6-i386
This command will remove the package even though there is a dependency problem.
And use dpkg to install packages:

sudo dpkg -i --force-depends libc6-i386_2.15-0ubuntu10_amd64.deb

I could successfully install libc6-bin using the package on the website, I was then planning on installing libc6, then libc6-amd64 and libc6-i386 and finally libc6-dev. But I'm stuck on this error.

I still have no idea how my packages ended up in this inconsistent situation. Is it a configuration issue?

Please, comment all your ppa's first. There are also some duplicate repositories (Google, for example), it shouldn't be so.
Comment them all and do:

sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get install -f

Do you have Synaptic Package manager installed? Can you install it? If yes, it could help you as well.

Do you have Synaptic Package Manager? Can you install and launch it? It could give you some clues.
I don't have it and I cannot install anything from my Software Center anymore as well. It thinks the catalog is broken, if I try to 'repair', I get the same error as I've pasted.

Any ideas?

What's going above is textbook on how to destroy an operation system by hand. Please stop any operation on libc6, it's the most lethal package of your system.

Have you ever tried 'apt-get -f install' ?

Which I now regretfully realize. Though, I did say I didn't have any clue on what I was doing, I was pretty much just following instructions.

`apt-get install -f` does not fix this mess, it just leads to more errors as can be seen here: http://paste.ubuntu.com/1294497/

I spent some time in #ubuntu on Freenode, and the general consensus seemed to be the installation is royally screwed, and a re-install is in order, unless you have a solution?

Thanks your input. So I should just grab the .deb files for all my packages that are broken? My apt-get install -f shows:

The following extra packages will be installed:
libc6 libc6:i386 libc6-dev libc6-i386
Suggested packages:
glibc-doc glibc-doc:i386 locales:i386
The following NEW packages will be installed:
libc6-dev libc6-i386
The following packages will be upgraded:
libc6 libc6:i386

What is the 'libc6:i386' package? I'm on a amd64 system, I'll try your approach and update. Thanks! :)

I'm not sure what that package is. Basically, I have the impression that dpkg will sort out the dependencies between all the packages on the command line. I suggest something like

dpkg -i libc6 libc6-dev libc6-i386

for the same generation of these packages. If dpkg is happy, they will install, otherwise it may tell you it wants another package also.

Okay, that *seems* to have worked even though there were errors in there. I'll try updating and upgrading and installing a new package now to see if APT is really back to normal

its due to multiarch actual config, dont worry. But i feel like you have pushed the bigest mess there, and i doubt you will get it working back smootly now :(:(

if you still want to try fixing it before doing a fresh clean reinstall, then try:

sudo apt-get install --reinstall dpkg gcc cpp udev ubuntu-desktop

Didn't really do anything.

Yeah, I'm just gonna suck it up and try upgrading to 12.10 over the weekend, if even the dist-upgrade fails, I'm bracing for a clean re-install :(

It could be caused by some package, installed manually or from some ppa repository which conflicts with other base system packages from official repositories. Everything cold be OK while installing it, but now it still depends on some older versions of packages and prevents system upgrades, causing this failure.
Try to remember which packages you have installed not from the official repositories and remove them.

Just read through this thread and am having the same problem. It occurs when I try to upgrade and when I try to get pretty much anything from any repository, but specifically with java and OpenMPI. It is driving me nuts!!

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2076329

Good luck with the upgrade/clean install. It will be interesting to see if that fixes the error.

Like mentioned before, I updated my system to 12.10 today and it seems to have fixed the APT dependency hell. Being careful not adding new PPAs now. Thanks for the help everyone! :)

I had a similar issue with nvidia-current see This thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2077451). What I did to solve it was to download the package manualy and install it with dpkg -i.
