Ok here is my delimma:
I decided I was fed up and tired of the HP home server EX495 os of windows home server edition and was going to try ubuntu server 12.04. I installed server on a usb drive and moved the hard drive from the EX495 headless to a Dell XPS since it was the system I have that had a SATA connection. It installed beautifully following the directions I found on the web by Dag http://dagolav.prestegarden.com/installing-ubuntu-on-the-hp-mediasmart-ex490/.
However after moving the hard drive back to the EX495 it will not connect to the network. I researched and tried setting it to a static ip to no avail. If I move the hard drive back to my system (XPS) I can run the server and it connects to the network.
In the interest of supplying all information in the hopes of getting this fixed I am using a Cisco E3000 home router and I also used information from Phil Kershaw at http://blog.philkershaw.me/2012/05/installing-linux-debianubuntu-and.html.
I have been working on this off and on for 4 days and am hitting the same brick wall please some one help.

Did I not put this in the right place? I truly had hoped I would have heard some idea by now.
