View Full Version : [lubuntu] 12.10 is broken and cant boot

i did the normal upgrade with update manager but after the reboot it hangs. i see the message something like starting ttymanager and then it switches to a black screen with mouse and back to the message with starting ttymanager. i tried with crtl+alt+f1 and saw shortly a login prompt but it switched immediately again to black screen and back to the message starting ttymanager. that switching dosnt stop. i have no idea how i get a shell

then i tried the livecd... i did check it and all ok no error. after boot it looks like it wants to open some windows but then the screen wents black. not possible to get a shell too.

so the system dosnt boot anymore and the live cd dosnt too.

any ideas?

i did the normal upgrade with update manager but after the reboot it hangs. i see the message something like starting ttymanager and then it switches to a black screen with mouse and back to the message with starting ttymanager. i tried with crtl+alt+f1 and saw shortly a login prompt but it switched immediately again to black screen and back to the message starting ttymanager. that switching dosnt stop. i have no idea how i get a shell

then i tried the livecd... i did check it and all ok no error. after boot it looks like it wants to open some windows but then the screen wents black. not possible to get a shell too.

so the system dosnt boot anymore and the live cd dosnt too.

any ideas?

It would help quite a bit if you at least told us what graphics adapter your system has.

i tried with another distro live cd to chroot

Is the internet working in live mode? Can you ping archive.ubuntu.com?

That looks like there is no internet or dns.

Are you sure ATI Rage is supported at all in 12.10? It's very old. Did you try a live cd of 12.10 to see if it will load correctly?

i can not ping it from chroot but i can browse it with the browser

it should be supported... no message anywhere which said they removed support... and the drivers are there

livecd dosnt work and for unknown reasons f6 to disable nomodeset dosnt work

Well if live mode doesn't work I would understand that as a problem. Maybe it's not video related, but there is something.

You should always try live mode before upgrading, it can point out issues.

I don't know 100% how chroot works but you should be able to ping I guess. Maybe the network settings are messed up (of your hdd installation, inside the chroot), that's why you can't ping and subsequently it can't find the repositories.

Try booting the 12.10 in live mode without the 'quiet splash' so that you can see the text scrolling. It can point out where it gets stuck. You can use that info to google around later.

in the chrroted area the link to /etc/resolv.conf is broken... in the non chrooted area the file is there... the reason i can browse but i dont get dns in the chrooted area

Have you tried booting into recovery mode? In the grub2 menu select the recovery mode entry, not the standard normal mode.

In the menu that opens, select Network to activate internet, and then select Drop to root shell which should drop you to a command prompt as root (in this case you don't need to run sudo in front of commands because you are as root).

In the command prompt you can try running commands.

Can you please post your /etc/X11/xorg.conf?

You appear to be having the same issue as reported here (http://forum.ubuntuusers.de/topic/x-server-startet-mit-mach64-chipsatz-nicht-hoc/).

I use ppc Debian Squeeze and have also been unable to enable EXA acceleration on my mach64 Rage Pro LT. I can specify

Option "AccelMethod" "XAA"
in the device section of my xorg.conf and it no longer segfaults, but this is not an optimal solution.
