You know, Gnome Shell can search pretty fast without opening the browser. Just write anythingfrom Activities and you're given the choice of Wikipedia or Google.

Is there a way to do this on Unity?

I read your post and didn't know the answer, but decided to experiment.

For anything on Wikipedia, I just opened the DASH and typed www.wikipedia.org and it brought me to the WIKI site.

Let's say you want to search about horses; Type www.wikipedia.org/wiki/horses

The format seems to be: www.wikipedia.org/wiki/whateveryoursearchinghere

(Results are opened in a browser window)

With Google the format is:
www.google.com/search?q=whateveryoursearchinghere

With Ubuntu 12.10 you have to enable "Google" as one of your "Online Accounts"

Select the Gear Icon / Me Menu [Top-right corner], Select"System Settings", Select "Online Accounts", Select "Google" from the list and enter your Google account information.

For Wikipedia, I found that a lens was created for Wikipedia. Go to: http://askubuntu.com/questions/38772/what-lenses-for-unity-are-available

[Other Lens' are listed there too]
