Upgrading 12.04 to 12.10

My update manager *the default one* dosn't display the new update and the last time i tryed to upgrade i had to enter a terminal command to do so, can anyone help me with what terminal command this is? or how to get my update manager working? The error i get when trying to check for updates is ERROR: No internet*or something like this* W:Failed to fetch http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/precise-security/Release Unable to find expected entry 'independent/source/Sources' in Release file (Wrong sources.list entry or malformed file) , W:Failed to fetch http://gg.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/precise-backports/Release Unable to find expected entry 'independent/source/Sources' in Release file (Wrong sources.list entry or malformed file) , E:Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead. i just want to upgrade to the new one without doing a clean install!

My system is not finding the update yet either. Tried doing the terminal codes as well as through update manager. Could it be as simple as it's just not officially out yet?

It is out, but can take 24 hours to sync round all the mirrors.

It's worth checking your
/etc/update-manager/release-upgrades

file as an LTS (12.04) install will only upgrade to an LTS release. So you would need to edit it should you wish to upgrade to the 12.10.

Me personally after a few years of upgrading have decided to stick to the LTS release's and add PPA's for the apps I use like firebox / Thunderbird and cinnamon

Just fixed by going to Update Manager>Settings>Updates Tab>Notify me of new Version... Set to Any New Version. Mine, for some reason, was set to LTS Only...

Right after I changed that Update Manager showed 12.10
The default for LTS releases is to only look for another LTS release.

This default makes good sense and can be easily changed as you've seen.

i've already set the notify me for new version as "for any new version"
but still update manager doesnt recognise any new releases
