View Full Version : No announcements for Quantal on the main pages of the Ubuntu site

I remember the time when a month or so before every new release there appeared a beautiful large counter on Ubuntu home page, which counted the days till the next release. There certainly used to be a suspense. But they didn't do anything like that for Precise. And Quantal comes out tomorrow (even today, where I live :) ), but I had to Google for the date, I couldn't find it on the Ubuntu site.

Why did they stop advertising future releases, I wonder?

I noticed the same thing, I went to see the release date and changes since I don't use the Beta's anymore and there was nothing.

Are we not as excited for this release?

I've only seen a countdown widget on one Ubuntu blog. I have been using beta 2 since the beginning of the month so there may be some last minute updates. OMG Ubuntu has an announcement displayed at the side of the page. I like 12.10 and it runs well on my hardware.
I have the Gnome shell 3.6 and XFCE session running well also.

I doubt they'll be advertising it. They probably don't want the Amazon thing to freak most people out, those who upgrade are basically the beta testers before the next LTS...

Not that there's anything wrong with that. Only advertising LTS releases to the public is likely a good move.

Yeah, the countdown brought anticipation and excitement. People would talk about it, 'I can't wait!' and so on. I wonder if the greater call for testers and/or the easy availability of the iso, has enticed users to install early and it dulls the excitement?

Even regular users are installing early without intention of 'testing', assuming it is ready enough. It reminds me of opening a present early, before the birthday or Christmas. The magic isn't there.

Off topic but the web results in unity can be turned of from the privacy app. 12.04 will a have long run so I'm sure that it will kept visible for some time to come.

It could be, but it was not the usual policy about releases. The "hype" about new releases usually atracts newcomers to linux and ubuntu, but if you change that aproach then, why doesnt Canonical make a rolling release development between LTSs?

I've had to verify if "today was the day?" for being sure about it. Nothing tells you about Quantal.

few hours tho!!

not countdows, but at least a "little banner" or gif on the front page. IMO.

I used to get exited and have installed all .10 releases to-date. However, looking after a number of family/friends pcs I have found that having got a desktop it seems in no time the support runs out - I have decided to stick now with just the LT releases. Even these cause me some grief as the desktop does change - the Unity move was not very welcome so the longer the better for me. .10 releases have too shorter life span.

10 releases have too shorter life span.As I'm on release 15 and I would agree. It's ok to upgrade every 6 months when you only maintain one computer but if you maintain many then some can slip through the net. I once had to update a machine using special repositories because the version of Ubuntu on it was over two years old.

The reason it takes so long to update to a new version is that application versions are tied to Ubuntu versions. That means you have to re-download the whole operating system, but also any applications you have installed.

I would prefer a yearly or bi-annual upgrade. That would give developers more time to fix things and make more significant changes.

I have added a graphic to my blog and it automatically changes the countdown to the coming release. So if you put it on any of your sites you can check it whenever you want.

Today is the release date, no?

I've long advocated that they make the LTS the default download, and as of today that appears to be what they're doing.

But I had also hoped that any "in-progress" (non-LTS) releases would be easily accessible as a non-default option.

This morning the only links I could find for 12.10 were buried in a TL/DR noisy release listings page, not the sort of things Canonical normally does with a new Ubuntu release, requiring the following steps just to find it:

1. Go to Ubuntu.com
2. Click "Download Now"
3. Click "Ubuntu Desktop"
4. Click "Get Ubuntu"
5. Scroll down the page to click the second-to-last item in the right column labeled "Images and checksums for 12.10"
6. Read a wall of text very carefully, trying not get confused by the archaic nomenclature which still refers to 64-bit versions as somehow specific to AMD, and if you can find an appropriate link with any confidence the try it and see what happens.

I'm hoping I just missed something.

The title is briliant. The glitch with the image to the right is unfortunate though.

P.S.: They uploaded the image as I was writing this message :)

P.P.S.: If only they said where I can get this laptop :)

So, what is "the pain of Windows 8"? What is really new in this "all-new Ubuntu 12.10"?

Don't see the issue, it will release and have the usual coverage, reviews and sundry opinions.

Nobody said anything about a problem. It's just a curiosity, they lauched Quantal today and no announcement was published on their site about this.
About 2 releases back, the first page was showing a counter until release date and the forums were full of release parties. Now... ghost town. "Knock-Knock. Is anybody there?".
For Precise, I missed the release date by 2 or 3 days because of this "total mistery".
So, the question is "Why this radical change?".

Ah yes - I went back just now and the new front page is in place. Nicely done, with the LTS prominently listed as the choice for long-term support.

And I rather like the Win8 smackdown. :)

I remember when people used to have release parties and everyone used to be so excited, anticipating the release. This time, I didn't even know it was getting released today. I've been meaning to find out when the release date was going to be, and it snuck up on me because no one really seemed to be talking about it.

It doesn't matter. I've been using 12.10 for a while now, anyway.

So you've used Ubuntu since Breezy, but you didn't join the forums until July of this year?

Does this show up anymore? I only get the "Your wish is our command" version. I was hoping it was rotating between a few sayings but I haven't seen any other than this one since!

No. They must have realized it was a dumb thing to put up, so they took it down pretty quick.

So you've used Ubuntu since Breezy, but you didn't join the forums until July of this year?Yes. I've used Ubuntu since Breezy. It was the first Linix distro to work properly with my wifi adapter. I've been through many testing phases, outlived automatix, gnome2, gaim (pidgin), xmms2, wengophone and many other projects. Back then it was a novelty. I actually liked the brown interface, but I think the purple is alot trendier. I don't know why they sounds haven't been updated since Dapper though ;-) It's good that we now have flash, because back in the day....

Believe me now?

I believe you. I'm just wondering why it took you this long to join the forums. ;)

I've been a user since Hoary, and I could be wrong, but it seems like they even used those same sounds back then.

Well, I'm not 100% sure about the soundpack but remember when testing Dapper that one of the cool new features was some new sounds. This included a welcome sound when the desktop started that had some drums in it. I think those drums have been cut out for some reason in recent releases. There were some performance issues on some of the machines I had. The sound stuttered because the computer was too busy loading the desktop to play any sound correctly.

I was more of an IRC kind of guy.
