I have a 64 bit system but chose 32 bit Ubuntu 12.04 because
I thought I could get my printer to run under it.
That failed so I'd like to upgrade to 64-bit Ubuntu 12.04
but I don't want to loose all my work, settings and customizations.
Is this possible?

Thanks and very grateful to have this forum - Randy

No, as far as I know, you can't switch to 64bit system later. You will have to do a new clean install.

If you have separate /home partition, you might be able to keep data and settings without much effort.
